To think 'Student of the Year' is a bit odd and unfair?

Today is my final day in uni (hurrah)!
As part of our leaving lecture thing they had a student of the year award.
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not a total misery guts, and I get that it's lovely to honour people who have gone the extra mile and all that. But for me it just felt odd to pick out one person.
I admit, I've not made any special effort to do anything particularly amazing for the student body or anything like that, so in no way would I expect to get an award like that anyway, but I know several other students who are very deserving of a shout out (always willing to swap sessions with others if need be, are very kind when it comes to supporting others and whatnot).
It just feels very outdated and totally unfair to give one person a mention? Is it just me?

Also, the person that got it is nice enough, but he's one of those people who will just force his way forward, without really giving anyone else a chance, and therefore probably does stand out more, but not always for the right reasons.

I can't help feeling sorry for the quieter ones who may be much more kind, caring and considerate, but don't announce it and so maybe overlooked?

I'm.totally prepared to be told to lighten up and not take it so seriously, but it just felt odd to me.

I do think that is quite a weird thing to have at university. Presumably it is given to the student who has made themselves known to the teaching faculty - others may have done as much but as you are all adults, the teaching faculty won’t necessarily know about them.
