10 small children up the aisle?!

Experiencing horrified fascination at the idea of sending ten children aged 2-7, including five under 5s, up the aisle without any adult bridesmaids!
Would be difficult at any wedding but a Royal one choreographed to the nth degree and broadcast throughout the world?!
The anxiety their poor parents must be going though!

Only somebody without small children of their own could think this would be a good idea!

Quantumblue · 17/05/2018 13:13

Yes it is hard to expect that a 2 year old will comply with instructions in a chapel with 100s of people. It will be a circus!

NurseButtercup · 17/05/2018 13:16

Awwwww 10 small children at least one will be crying, one will attempt to be in charge, one will be twirling and one will walk in the wrong direction or get frustrated/distracted. They will make all the adults smile and they will be a welcome distraction. Grin

I had little bridesmaids too - my cousins daughters were 2 & 4. The 2yo face planted spectacularly and it was a total “awww” moment as her sister helped her up and brushed her dress down grin I think it’s cute when the bridesmaids are children

Do you know, I basically hate weddings, and didn't have one myself, but your post made me smile Smile

It made me remember back when I was a kid, and my sisters and I were bridesmaids for various cousins, and brides had a sense of humour and weddings were a lovely occasion for a get together of family and friends, old people, kids and all, not a huge source of strife and one-upmanship and going into debt and getting the most 'perfect' photos and the most silent, solemn ceremonies.

genuine thanks, and your wedding sounds lovely Grin

steppemum · 17/05/2018 13:19

Oh dear, my brother had 2 little bridesmaids age 2 and 3, their mums sat at the front and waved and they ran full pelt down the aisle and vanished!
Wasn't quite what we were expecting, but as pp has said, everyone just said Aww cute.

AppleScoop · 17/05/2018 13:19

Maybe Meghan will walk down the isle surrounded by children, looking beautiful and defiant!

BlueJava · 17/05/2018 13:33

It's great - the scope for something funny/cute happening is huge! :) Who cares, yes it's on TV, but they are kids. I'm sure Harry and Meghan will be cool about whatever occurs. I bet Kate looks stressed though!

As vicar I've had to say to parents who want little ones to be bridesmaids and page boys that it is going to go one of two ways. One type of child will rise to,the occasion, see their audience and own the occasion coming down the aisle with poise and charm. The other type of child will fight, flight or fall down. There may be tears and tantrums and wetting of knickers. You can't tell before the big day which type of child you have as you can't do a rehearsal with 200 people watching.

Usually we have adult bridesmaids holding hands with the tinies. Or we go with the American way of getting the bride into church and send the tinies in first with grandma or similar ready to sweep them up at the bottom of the aisle. When all the tinies are safely in the bride makes her entrance.

Dandeliontea123 · 17/05/2018 13:34

I hope so Apple!

Going on recent form, that will be Charlotte.

TressiliansStone · 17/05/2018 15:15

My sister did this with 6 children, aged 2–4 yrs, and had them do a dance as they came up the aisle! Shock

It was awesome.

MuddyForestWalks · 17/05/2018 15:22

DrEustaciaBenson I can see Charlotte regally dragging the rest of the children along as she smiles for the crowd Grin

I have this image of Meghan as an elegant befrocked Darby O'Gill surrounded by Little People.

milliemolliemou · 17/05/2018 15:29

Not sure you need quite so many? The problem is if one of them kicks off and needs to be taken out ... quite something under the gaze of so many people and tv cameras. Still, the rehearsal was today ..... they'll know what to expect ....

MyBreadIsEggy · 17/05/2018 17:38

Princess Charlotte will totally boss it Grin
From what we’ve seen of her in the press, it seems like she’s got sass! She’ll strut down the aisle no bother

viques · 17/05/2018 19:13

didnt George have a wobbly lip moment at Pippas wedding? I bet his mum has put the fear of the Windsors into him this time, though he is a bit older, and a big boy now..........

Frouby · 17/05/2018 19:19

I get married on saturday too.

I have 2 nieces, 4 and 6 as flowersgirls, my ds, 4, as pageboy and my dd 13 as a bridesmaid.

6 year old will totally rock it, 4 year old niece will have a melt down or own it, dd will outshine me and ds says he is shy and wants to stand with daddy or hold my hand.

It will be cute whatever.

Yorkshirebetty · 17/05/2018 19:39

I don't blame Meghan for not having an adult bridesmaid... Just think of the impact Pippa Middleton made... Hmm

PrettyLovely · 17/05/2018 19:46

I had 7 and they were amazing, No hiccups at all and they looked adorable. Smile

TressiliansStone · 17/05/2018 19:50

Frouby, congratulations, and hope you have a wonderful day!

ForalltheSaints · 17/05/2018 20:09

If any of them are likely to steal the show, or be an embarrassment, it will be Prince George I reckon.

LakieLady · 17/05/2018 20:28

DSS was a pageboy at his uncle's wedding when he was 4. He refused to walk down the aisle, insisting that it was time for cake. DP had to grab him and take him out of the church because he kicked off had a massive tantrum.

At the reception, during the speeches, he sat on the floor under the top table, chanting "Fuck, fuck, fuck" at the top of his voice until DP managed to manhandle him outside again.

He's 28 now, and we enjoy reminding him of this every time he goes to a wedding.

WhatisaNarwhal · 17/05/2018 20:32

I suspect it has something to do with children being unable to give ill advised interviews to Hello or Okay magazine, do a morning breakfast show or some quick turnaround documentary shortly thereafter...

dancinfeet · 17/05/2018 21:57

my eldest was bridesmaid for a friend when she was two and a half. I was dreading it, as she was a mischievous little tyke, but in the end she was on her best behaviour all day. I think she thought she had genuinely turned into a princess, so had to behave as such, she walked down the aisle behind my friend nodding graciously at the congregation as if they were her royal subjects. She was good as gold all day, even at the evening celebrations. Back to her usual self the next day though, when she wasn't dressed like a princess and back in her usual clothes and no audience!

Have to say, if I was one of the parents of the children this weekend, I would be dreading it knowing that the TV cameras will be there and so many people.

QueenDandelion · 18/05/2018 09:38

At my sister's wedding there was a 2yo flower boy who was the son of her friends. He looked fabulous in a little cream suit, regal pout and long curly hair! But the second he was handed the basket and sent off down the aisle he went totally batshit and ran around screaming, both his parents sprinted after him but couldn't catch him for ages :o

The thing is nobody minded, it was funny and didn't spoil the day in any way. I think H & M are the type to go with the flow and not get uptight about it, so it's fine. Can't wait to see it. :)
