AIBU to not understand the fuss over New Look?

Why shouldn’t they charge more for bigger sizes, after all it takes more fabric. No ones up in arms about children’s clothing, most stores charge more as the size increases in the children’s dept. I’m a size 18 btw and if I had to pay more it would definitely motivate me to lose weight!

I agree. I’m a short size six. Why should I pay the same as you when you’re getting twice (no idea, don’t wish to offend!) as much for your money?

cloudyweewee · 15/05/2018 22:19

So should shoe shops charge more for bigger sizes then? I take a size 8 shoe so should I pay more than someone with dainty little tootsies?

Baubletrouble43 · 15/05/2018 22:21

Cloudy that kind of happens already. I'm a uk4 and can buy a lot of my shoes from junior ranges a lot cheaper than my bf who is a 6

ThePinkOcelot · 15/05/2018 22:21

Is there a fuss?

CheekyRedhead · 15/05/2018 22:23

Where is he fuss???

KitanaKay · 15/05/2018 22:23

I’m a size 10 but I think it’s poor form. The item should cost the same regardless of size.

bassackwards · 15/05/2018 22:24

It was headline news this evening! Just ridiculous

Amanduh · 15/05/2018 22:26

No, I don’t think it’s fair. I’m a size 10/12 but have to buy tall clothes a lot and it’s bloody frustrating I have to pay more. The ‘more material’ line doesn’t work - a size 12 woman takes more than a size 6 but isn’t being charged for it? Noones getting ‘twice for their money’ either that’s bloody ridiculous, they’re getting the same in their size. Where do you draw the line? Making a size 18 pay 15% more than a size 16 isn’t reasonable.

Mexicantortilla · 15/05/2018 22:26

The fuss is on the news right now! I don’t see anyone kicking up a fuss over the fact that kids clothes cost more by age!

OP posts:
RhurbabAndCustard · 15/05/2018 22:26

More material for larger clothes equals more money. Without being rude to anyone (I am a size 16) one could lose weight and pay less. People generally can't do anything about shoe size so it's not comparable. I have size 6 friends and way less material so I can see why more could be charged .......

MipMipMip · 15/05/2018 22:26

The fabric is only a tiny part of the cost at this level. Most of it is making it, transport, shop rent, staffing, marketing etc. Why should bigger sizes pay more for that?

RhurbabAndCustard · 15/05/2018 22:26

MexicanTortilla good point!

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/05/2018 22:27

Did they reduce the price for the smaller clothes or just say they make the larger clothes more expensive so they can charge more and get support based on the fact that it's fine to shame larger people?

FWIW I make my own clothes a lot and the cost of the fabric changes not at all or very little between sizes. The labour, thread, zips, overhead, shipping and shop time would all be the same. It's bullshit (do you actually know how cheap clothes are?). You can get something made in a factory in Bangladesh by 7 yo for pennies. It's just a way to charge more.

TheFairyCaravan · 15/05/2018 22:27

So should shoe shops charge more for bigger sizes then?

They already do. DH is a size 14. You can very rarely get that size in a “normal” shoe shop so have to go to a specialist stockist. Most of the time there is a premium to pay. He’s tall and has long legs too and shops have charged more for their “big and tall” range for years.

Havana7 · 15/05/2018 22:27

Yes YABU so should a woman who is postnatal have to pay more than she did before pregnancy because her body has changed? Should someone on steroids have to pay more because their motabalism has slowed?

BarbaraOcumbungles · 15/05/2018 22:27

More fabric = more money. It’s not hard to understand. Kids clothes cost more the bigger they are.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/05/2018 22:29

That's a supply and demand issue. Not the same. There are more larger people. Therefore their clothes should actually cost less. Bulk you see.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/05/2018 22:30

More fabric = more money. It’s not hard to understand.

Again, bullshit. The fabric cost difference is minuscule.

RunMummyRun68 · 15/05/2018 22:30

Yes. More fabric, moremoney

A size 18 uses so much more than a size 10. Basic.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/05/2018 22:31

That seems logical but it's NOT.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 15/05/2018 22:31

Size 24 clothes must use twice as much fabric as a size 12. How can you describe the cost difference as minuscule?

Narya · 15/05/2018 22:32

More fabric = more money. It’s not hard to understand. Kids clothes cost more the bigger they are

With that logic you'd think knickers would be cheaper than they are...

notoriousnames · 15/05/2018 22:32

You can't claim more material so higher price. You'll find plenty of crop tops or barely there shorts on sale for higher prices than leggings and long sleeve tops so that's an invalid reason

bassackwards · 15/05/2018 22:33

Shops can charge what they like for an item of clothing. If shoppers find it too expensive or otherwise disagree with the pricing model they can shop elsewhere. Free market and all that. I don't really get what the fuss is about.

dayswithaY · 15/05/2018 22:34

A clothes manufacturer was interviewed on the radio and she said by far the most expensive part of a garment is the fabric. Cost of zip, thread, buttons etc is minimal.
