You might want to read your thread title...

bbcessex · 15/05/2018 15:34

😂😂😂😂 although autocorrect typo not grammar

Whats was 'days' autocorrected from?

Tinlegs · 15/05/2018 15:35

You are correct.

Sparklingbrook · 15/05/2018 15:36

I don't mind whether it's have or has, it's just saying they have commented on the thread so we know.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 15/05/2018 15:36

I'm guessing its autocorrected from 'to say' sparkling

But it doesnt yake away from the irony

tigerrun · 15/05/2018 15:38

‘Say’ not ‘days’!? And either ‘ or “ to quote a word or phrase. I’m going with yes you are a little rusty on the old grammar OP ;)

I’d take the use of ‘have’ as being in the context of ‘the group of people known as MNHQ have’. Not ‘the building known as MNHQ has’. I could be wrong though.

FadedRed · 15/05/2018 15:40

Does it depend on whether MNHQ is a single entity or a plurality?

DadDadDad · 15/05/2018 15:42

MNHQ is short for Mumsnet Headquarters. If you google phrases like "Headquarters have ordered" and "Headquarters has ordered" they both seem to arise.

To me "have" sounds more natural. Even without the clue of an "s" at the end, "headquarters" feels like a group noun like "government" or "team": "The government have decided...", "Arsenal have scored". I think American English is different on that point.

So, I can't see the objection to "MNHQ have..."

Nquartz · 15/05/2018 15:42

I'd agree with this

Hillarious · 15/05/2018 15:44

The group (singular) of people known as MNHQ has
The people (plural) known as MNHQ have
Surely?

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 15/05/2018 15:44

Wtf is going on with this thread title?!

WishTheGroundWouldSwallowMeUp · 15/05/2018 15:44

I think MNHQ have is correct. MNHQ does not refer to one person.

wish has commented on..

wish's family have commented on...

IDK but it makes sense to me.

bbcessex · 15/05/2018 15:58

AIBU to say that it's MNHQ has commented on this thread, not have

Mumsnet Headquarters have commented on this thread...
Mumsnet Headquarters has commented on this thread...

I'm definitely right.

Best post this in Site Stuff in that case and get it all sorted. Wink Grin

bbcessex · 15/05/2018 16:00

tigerrun - I don't think you can use quote marks in a title without it displaying in a strange fashion (although I managed that myself anyway, to be honest!)

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 15/05/2018 16:02

Thing is your not, as has been explained unless you think the building in which MN is based has suddenly become senitant and devoloped an ablity to type on the internet

WorraLiberty · 15/05/2018 16:08

WishTheGroundWouldSwallowMeUp · 15/05/2018 16:09

head quarters doesn't mean one person though.

it's not one person called "head quarters"

Sparklingbrook · 15/05/2018 16:10

This thread. It wouldn't pass any English exams. Grin

bbcessex · 15/05/2018 16:10

Naught - too many comments to make on your post, I'm afraid!

OP posts:
bbcessex · 15/05/2018 16:11

Sparkling - you're right - I might have to go back and re-educate myself Grin

(I'm still definitely right, though!)
