Just tried to purchase a few secondhand items. But sellers aren't budging on price.

AIBU to think it's secondhand goods , get off your high horse!

So I saw a dress originally £150 but on Shpock for £100. I put in an offer for £70 as in the store it's gone down to £100 plus I would have to have it dry cleaned.

But the seller refused to budge. Seriously what's wrong with these people do they not understand that they won't get the full price that they paid in store. They are not celebrities where price goes up with their BO stains.

Just wanted to save a few pennies but it's not working. So now I will have to go into town and find a dress to wear before Saturday.

Rant over.

You’re the most unpleasant poster I’ve seen so far

adaline · 15/05/2018 06:49

Why on earth should they budge?

If you don't want to pay that much, find another dress somewhere else! You're hardly being forced to buy it are you?!

adaline · 15/05/2018 06:50

And £100 is ridiculously expensive imo - if you want to save money why are you looking at dresses for that much? Even £70 would be pushing it for me!

BurberryIsSo2000 · 15/05/2018 06:51

I agree OP.

Seems incredibly odd that someone would expect £100 (used) when it's in the shop for £100 (new) Confused

blacksheeep · 15/05/2018 06:57

I'm not being forced to buy it. However I choose to buy secondhand so that I could save a few £££s.

As sellers they can put whatever price they wish to. However I find it irritating when they feel they have paid £150 for something NEW and wish to sell the USED for the same price.

And it's not just I don't want to sell at such a low price. But more I paid x amount so I want x amount

My point is it's SECONDHAND.

Shpock is a car boot sale app.

NewYearNewMe18 · 15/05/2018 06:58

FB Marketplace.

I've noticed, if you look in the more affluent areas the prices are give away cheap. People just want shot before the next John Lewis delivery. Where as in the less affluent areas people still price a 5yo DFS sofa for near the original selling price 'as new with wear and tear' and are chancing their arm.

Your OP is unpleasant though

blacksheeep · 15/05/2018 07:07

Sorry if I am coming off unpleasant.

I don't understand why people get upset when you go in with a lower offer.

People often do it when buying a house- you offer what it is worth. 😊

HolidayHelpPlease · 15/05/2018 07:10

I happen to agree with your OP - should always be wriggle room! But I will NEVER buy off of Shpock again after a women charged me £55 for two dresses and never posted them. All they did was ban her. There’s no buyer protection at all

Bridesmaidinchief · 15/05/2018 07:11

YABU. It's not the seller's fault you can't afford the price. The value of a second hand item is what someone will pay for it. If they think another person will pay £100, there's no reason why they should sell to you for £70 just because that's what you think it's worth. You need to get over yourself a bit...

ScreamingValenta · 15/05/2018 07:14

If the item doesn't sell, the price will probably be reduced later. However, I do think YABU - a seller is entitled to set the price they want to achieve. It might be unwise to set the price too high, but it's not wrong - no one is forced to buy at that price.

TheMasterNotMargarita · 15/05/2018 07:18

I used to do car boot sales.
I took good quality stuff and sold it for peanuts. Yes, I know you're supposed to haggle a bit but the cheek of some folk was unreal. You're OP does come over as though the sellers should be lucky you've even offered to buy their crappy wares!
I'm with NewYear about the sofas etc but with the dress...they may really only have worn it once so a reduction to £100 is pretty reasonable.

TheMasterNotMargarita · 15/05/2018 07:19

Ahhh your OP

OneInEight · 15/05/2018 07:31

What hagglers do not always realise is to them what is a 50% reduction in price is to us all our profit. We would go out of business pretty quickly if we accepted the ridiculous offers some buyers make.

BurberryIsSo2000 · 15/05/2018 07:32

TheMaster How is a reduction to £100 for a used item (worn once, but still), worthy of the same value as the item BRAND NEW in store?

helloBuddy · 15/05/2018 07:35

I'm often surprised at the amount people try and sell things for. I always look at the price of the item new and go off that for what I'm willing to pay. Some people try and sell over the new price.

RebootYourEngine · 15/05/2018 07:37

I know what you mean but your OP comes across as horrible.

steppedonlego · 15/05/2018 07:38

I agree op. The amount of (in particular) Facebook marketplace posts that say “brand new, just want what I paid for it” is staggering. If I want it brand new at full price, I’ll go to the shop, get buyer protection and not have it sat on a strangers sofa for a week thanks.

AlfredDaButtler · 15/05/2018 07:38

You need to take yourself to whatever the current royal wedding thread is Grin

blacksheeep · 15/05/2018 07:41

I'm not upset with the refusal of going down in price. I was upset that they kept saying I bought it for £150 and that's what it is worth. To me as a buyer it is not worth £150 because it's been worn. And I would probably would have bought it from them for £100 just for the convenience.

However I did buy a lovely clutch for £5 as advertised in depop no haggling required

Accessories from Shpock £12 £3 less then advertised as I'm collecting.

And even though I am trying to save money. Splashing out £100 on a dress is my treat, £100 is my budget if I can get it for £70.
Great.

All those who have agreed with me thank you. All those who don't I'm sorry

Have a good day all😊

I’m totally confused as to why everyone thinks your original post was unpleasant?!?

Anyway I agree OP. Clearly up to everyone to try and sell for whatever price they want but I’m on a few Facebook selling groups and am constantly astonished at the prices people want for used goods.

I dont think your op is unpleasant at all. Im totally with you OP.

Some of these people are professional buyers and resellers I think and so they will hold out for the price that they paid or are expecting to be given because it may be brand new.

Try charity shops, the more affluent ones around here usually have a ton of stuff that you can choose from and mostly brand new with the tags still on for no where near as you'd pay on eBay or the other app.

BurberryIsSo2000 · 15/05/2018 08:37

Oh and just to add to my reply, it's also annoying when people add to their ad/post "Need gone TODAY" or "Need gone asap"

Like they're doing you some huge favour and just want to be rid of the shite quicker than a baker dropping hot buns

SluttyButty · 15/05/2018 08:49

Totally agree, I always sell secondhand stuff at sensible prices, I want it to go. I just don't get the people that ask silly high amounts for a secondhand item. Mind you charity shops here ask silly money so I'm very choosy about what I buy I'm not paying £8 for a second hand primark cardi

IIIustriousIyIllogical · 15/05/2018 08:58

If you want to bid on something, use Ebay.

But if I advertise something somewhere else for a fixed price, don't turn up & try to haggle.

I've asked for the price I want for it, if you're not willing to pay that - don't!

Someone else will.
