To beg for an extraction

I joined a dentist last week for an emergency, there's a large hole in my tooth and it needs to be extracted.
The dentist booked me an appointment for tomorrow to sort out a treatment plan, it's a half hour long appointment.
However, the sensitivity is really bad. Do you think there is any chance that she'll extract tomorrow rather than making another appointment? Even if its only a week until the extraction I'm not sure that I can wait that long.
Aibu to beg her to extract the tooth in the appointed tomorrow, and does anyone think she actually will?

If you tell her its really painful she will at least do something to ease the pain. An extraction is normally quite quick so she may do it right away.

If you are in enough pain and an extraction is the only option, I am sure they will find the time to extract, rather than discuss a plan. You are the patient and if that's what you want, they should accommodate. Good luck OP, there is nothing worse than tooth ache Flowers

She may suggest trying to save the tooth with a root filling. If so she might do a temporary filling to ease the sensitivity and then root filling later.

That sounds promising then! I do need other treatment but I'm a teacher and could do without kissing another morning for the extraction. She did say today would be to discuss and we'd boom for the extraction then but the pain stops me sleeping on bad nights.

As a dentist I’d totally do it there and then, assuming I thought I had time to do it without me running really late for subsequent appointments.

Missing another day obviously!
rainy I've chosen an extraction rather than root canal as I'm already missing four teeth, I'd rather a permanent solution.

I had the exact same 2 weeks ago. A wisdom tooth that's been a bit of a git for a couple of years started aching again. I decided enough. Booked a check up and mentioned it. He said right away, do you want me to take it out today? Long story short. Tooth out in 10 mins. Home in 5 and back at work an hour later. Sorted :)

On the other side though. If it's not a wisdom tooth and completely useless they may we'll try a root canal. It's up to you really! I had a root canal about 20 years ago that slowly crumbled and ended up having to be pulled out in the end. However I do miss that tooth on that side. It's not visible just annoying when eating anything hard! Argh teeth!

MyNewAlias · 14/05/2018 19:35

Is there an emergency dentist open in your area tonight? If you can get in there they will probably extract it straight away.

Darknessinthevalley · 14/05/2018 19:39

There's no emergency coverage, and I've refused a root canal, but responses seem promising. I'm hoping that as I desperate she'll see sense and help if she can.

Which tooth is it?

I love crisps and if you lose a molar on each side, I don't see how you can eat crisps properly, except by crunching them with your front teeth, which might be a little odd.

I had a hole in my gums left by a second molar extracted on my lower right jaw due to a failed root canal/crown. I could not eat any hard food on that side. A dental implant to replace a tooth costs thousands. A root canal will be a cheaper interim solution though the other poster is right in that it may fail eventually.

It is a tough one. I can see the attraction of an extraction but it affects quality of life in terms of the cosmetic effect of having a hole in your gums and the inability to chew hard food on that side if it is a molar.

I got a root canal in one of my back teeth because a lump of it crumbled while i was pregnant, all that effort to save the tooth and I still only half have a tooth left, wish I'd just had it taken it tbh. I'd imagine the dentist will do it tomorrow, I had that root canal on the spot. They won't leave you in pain.

Darknessinthevalley · 14/05/2018 19:53

I won't have a gap, because I already have a denture, they can add another tooth on easily! Thanks so much for sharing experiences though!
It must have been so annoying to go through root canal to lose it!
