I’ve had several incidents on the roads recently where I have stopped to allow oncoming vehicles to come through but cars behind me have overtaken me and blundered on through. Or endless times when I have stopped to allow oncoming traffic through when cars are parked etc and not one bloody person has thanked me. Or people just walking straight onto a zebra crossing (often texting) no regard for their own safety as they don’t even look up let alone thank you for stopping!
My dh has been a civil engineer working on the roads for the last 30 years. The abuse they all get is unbelievable, to the point that his company has issued them all with body cameras so they can start prosecuting offenders. They regularly have to close roads due to working on them and people blatantly ignore the road closed signs as they obviously don’t apply to them!! They will demand they are let through and will swear, scream and abuse dh and his co workers. Other gangs have had bottles of urine thrown at them and some have even been knocked over with vehicles. Some people will drive through regardless. Last year a woman drove through ignoring everyone and ended up in the ditch, the stupid bitch. She had to wait 5 hours for someone to come get her, haha karma!
Anyhow, dh says this has become much much worse over the last few years, he never experienced this kind of abuse years back.
Why is everyone so, so angry, self obsessed and entitled these days? What has happened to old fashioned basic good manners? Please, thank you and a smile doesn’t cost the earth and in my opinion makes you a better person.
I worry about the world my dc will grow up in 😕

I’ve not passed my test long so my theory and hazard tests are still fresh in my mind and drummed into me.
I’ve been driving on my own for a few weeks now and I’m so shocked about the amount of people over taking me while I’m DOING the speed limit. On bends, with on coming traffic and with cars coming out of junctions by a zebra crossing with teenagers on it. Shocking. I’m getting a dash cam. All of these incidents have happened on my way home from work at 8pm ish when there is very little or no traffic. I think these Audi/BMW drivers see my little beetle and think I’m a silly girly driver sticking to the rules of the road. It’s scary.

people ignore "road closed" signs?

I live in London and haven't driven for ages. We want to move and I just assumed I'd have to start again but the behaviour I see on the roads makes me wonder if that's a good idea. Perhaps when we move it will need to be to an area that has good public transport.

also terrible drivers in London can't usually go faster than 20mph so in a place full of National Speed Limit roads the potential for things to go wrong is a lot higher.

Yep, there's a very small section of dual carriageway near us that's 40 mph (due to pub being opened on the new industrial estate). The rest of the stretch behind and after is national limit.

I said to DH if the council want some fast money they should stick a speed camera there! The amount of people who don't see the big 40 sign (or more likely think it doesn't apply to them), and are up my arse or aggressively speeding round me because they think I'm a slow nervous lady driver, while I'm doing bang on 40 is ridiculous.

I was shocked at how much better the motorway driving in France is. Great lane discipline and using the passing lane properly. And indicators seem to work on all those Renaults and Citroens!

I’m experiencing quite a bit of aggression from the higher end vehicles these days. I live in a traditionally poor area, but there still seems to be a lot more audis, bmws and 4x4s now and they drive in an intimidating manner. I often have someone up my arse and I’m a brisk driver not a snail type. I do drive a small car though.

I’ve noticed that people are ruder and more brash than they used to be - in all manner of places, not just the roads. If you’re a quiet polite type you just seem to cause irritation to others Sad

I live in a big city and hate driving around it. People simply wouldn’t treat people the same way face to face as they do in their cars. I try to rise above any aggression I encounter but it is difficult when someone is being an absolute numpty ie going all over the lanes at an island and beeping when they almost crash into me in my correct lane or overtaking when waiting for an (indicating!) bus to pull out Angry .
