To book annual leave off new job

I have accepted an offer on a new job 2 weeks ago and start in 3 weeks. During the time of the interview they asked me if I had any holidays booked and I did not.

Now with the new job and a friend free to go somewhere, I am in a position to be able to go on one.

AIBU to email HR about this and let them know I am hoping to book a summer holiday for a week? I don't have any specific dates in mind so would ask them when would suit them for me to take time off.

I'd say don't email HR or anyone else in the company before starting the job properly.
I don't think it will be perceived well, if you email with a holiday request now.
Besides HR (or even your department manager) wouldn't be able to tell you at this stage when it is suitable for you to go for a week.
They asked you in the interview and you didn't have any dates then. If means nothing urgent if essential at this stage. So start the job in few weeks, then among other things that you might ask your manager or trainer, to do with the job, you can casually mention your holiday as well. Let them see your professionalism first, and ask then.

You might not be able to until 3 months has passed, as they usually accrue leave usually at 2 ish days a month, before you can take it. So for a week off you have to wait until you have worked 3 months as you haven't informed them of any planned leave prior to taking the job.

Do not email HR because this will look to your manager like you are trying to go over their head and force it on them.

The best thing to do would be to wait until you start and discuss it with your line manager. They might be flexible and happy for you to go, but if they have an induction and training programme in place and you book time off without consulting with them you will look really shitty and to all the people involved, not just your manager.

you usually have to accrue it as pp says, but of course most people would expect to take a summer holiday.

in the organisations I work in we'd allow a week in summer for a new starter, but were they to leave before they'd accrued the time it would be deducted from last payroll.

How long is probation though?
