she bought DS1 a box of magic tricks for Easter and he has been incessantly perfoming them since then.

aarrrgh! I hate - absolutely totally LOATHE - magic. I can barely stand it when it's on TV, but I'd never ever in a million years voluntarily go watch a magic show and nwo I have them daily IN MY LIVING ROOM.

She hates me.

One Xmas, we were all staying with my PILs at my BILs holiday house. My MIL produced a toy guitar for the 3 yr old youngest cousin and he proceeded to deafen everyone all day - can’t blame the boy, and my aghast BIL did keep distracting him and gently removing it to a high shelf. MIL kept getting it down for him in a display of weird power politics - it was saved by an 8 yr old cousin coming into the room, sadly shaking her head, holding the shattered remains of the horrible thing and saying ‘ oh, dear, it fell over’, I don’t think it will work now’ Cue suppressed snort from assembled group of children behind her who had clearly assisted in the jumping on top of it. Peace .

Nice to see I'm not the only one!
I do watch him, he performs often (he did a "set" at his little brother's birthday with all the family there), and he is rather good at it, I can see that - I just really, really hate it.
He keeps being amazed that I'm not trying to work out how each trick is done (unlike his cousin, who wants to know the secret behind every single one). The reason isn't, as I tell him, that I'm "happy to believe in the magic"....it's that "i don't give a fuck"

I have been sneaky though - unknown to him, I have bought two tickets to go for two very famous magicians (he's been watching their shows on YouTube and bought himself the dvd), and I am going to (strongly) suggest that MIL go with him
