...to want to know how to earn £50,000 + in the quickest easiest way?

Hi all,

I really want, and really need to move on in life and to do so (like everyone, I guess) need to really up my earning potential, which is frankly pathetic and virtually impossible to live on in my area (between Kingsto and Guildford, basically- lovely but expensive for a first time buyer).

I very recently moved in with friends on a short-term basis, which is very cheap, but definitely temporary while I sort myself out (but better than living in my car!). My recent experiences have made me see I would like my own home very much, and feel that I won’t have any real stability unless I work towards this, or feel psychologically like I’m trying, at least.

The problems:

  • I am single and not in debt, but on a tight, tight budget (so one salary), plus no family help (obviously I’m not entitled to this, but thought best to include as there’d be no extra help forthcoming )
  • I am pushing 40, so no spring chicken first time buyer!
  • I know I can’t buy in my area on my own but I can’t move to the north etc as no connections at all and I have no interest in doing so. I’d rather a shared ownership studio in the shittiest part of Croydon than a 2 bedroom house up north etc (no offence, I just don’t know the area).

How can I pull myself together and improve my earning potential, please? I currently do a carer job and also am now teaching ESOL to adults again (both of which I am enjoying), but I really need a job with more earning potential and stability.

I can’t afford and don’t want to retrain for too long (I was looking into Occupational Therapy training but £20,000 training costs for a job which pays not much more is sadly not feasible for me, but know that some retraining is probably necessary for a ‘better’ job.

I really can’t work with kids in any way ever again as it’s not for me (ex-primary school teacher), and ideally don’t want to commute as I have a phobia of tubes etc. I would love to move nearer the coast (somewhere near Portsmouth sort of areas).

I love art, creative things like the theatre, graphic design etc, animals- particularly dogs, beauty, books, travel, the outdoors, conservation, and am interested in ethical companies etc.

Sorry for long post, have had a few things happen recently, and feel I have a chance to try to improve my life now; like a now or never situation in a positive way!

Any ideas, at all?

@MrsPicklesonSmythe

For us, it would replace two salaries meaning one could work and one could SAH

Remembering of course that one person on £50k earns less than 2 people on £25k.

A household with 1 £50k earner brings in £3038 a month.
A household with 2 £25k earners brings in £3362 a month.

Buy the 2 bed up north, or something you can afford and rent it out or do a place up in your spare time and sell it.

Or do an extra job. Hospitality company where you can pick and choose your shifts. You should make an extra £5-15000 per year

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 13/05/2018 17:58

@UnsuspectedItem yes, good point. I think there may be a couple of other things affected too like child benefit. It’s just a benchmark to aim towards though really rather than a definite figure. Speaking for myself not the op here though.

midnightmisssuki · 13/05/2018 18:11

Errrrr OP you said you didn’t want to work with children so I suppose being a nanny is out of the question?

I would re-train or Work your way up.

RebeccaBunchLawyer · 13/05/2018 20:00

midnight, yes, I do not ever wish to work with children ever again. I have been a nanny, teacher and tutor working with them, and that’s not something I wish to return to. However, I was gobsmacked at UnsuspectedItem’s salary for this type of work.

OP you can't rent out shared ownership properties.

Any good at maths and computers? Maybe becoming a programmer, or something in IT (like software testing).

Justanotherlurker · 13/05/2018 20:21

There is no magic bullet, to think you can switch careers and jump into a 50K salary is quite frankly deluded.

The anecdotes on these types of threads never come up with a personal situation and say about their friends/dh etc and ignore the many caveats.

Still, good luck in the future but I think you should not be targeting a salary and think about making ends meet in your current situation and everything else is a bonus.

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 13/05/2018 20:24

I’m planning on using my PA skills to set up as a VA. I’m going to study bookkeeping alongside to help up my chances of securing clients (I have previously run my own small business so some small amount of experience here) and if I’m any good at that move on to studying accountancy. Getting the experience whilst self employed will be challenging but hopefully I’ll be qualified and on my way to a decent salary by the time my 3 month old is ready for school. That’s this weeks plan anyway Grin I have a list of ideas as long as my arm but this one seems most sensible.... unless anyone thinks it sounds unachievable...

Can you marry a rich guy?

LemonysSnicket · 13/05/2018 20:44

All I can say is accounting. If you have a degree then the public sector may train you( with a £30k wage) and when you qualify you go up to £50k.
Many of my 24 yo friends have done this and are living the high life

If you have, may, there are so many caveats implieded that you might as well suggested selling coke via uber.

There is no magic bullet, the 3 identical threads have offered nothing other than anecdotes, those that are in this wage bracket understand the sacrifices necessary
