To ask that when writing your child's year you add their age?

Please.

So many threads I read where posters will describe a situation and mention the year their child is in at school. We don't all follow the same school year groups, I'm in Scotland and when I read about 'DD, year 9' it takes a while to work out the age they could be. It would be so much easier if posters could just say 'DD, year 9, who is X'

Please Thanks

Agree. Even if you're in the same system there's a difference between 6yo in y1 and 6yo in y2 so knowing both is helpful. A few extra letters adding a lot of information!

You can abbreviate it to e.g. DC2(7) y2 to save typing.

I don't think too many readers get involved enough to give this a second thought Hmm

NeedForBlossom · 13/05/2018 15:23

op just remember that students are 4/5 years older than their school year in England.

So:
Year 5 - 9/10
Year 9 - 13/14
Year 13 - 17/18

Ages are much more helpful than descriptions of school year level that don't make sense outside of the country - what do things like 'KS2' etc mean?

araiwa · 13/05/2018 15:34

Just say age. Why school year? Less precise and everyone understands age but not all the different school years

Copperbonnet · 13/05/2018 15:35

I do think some posters forget that not everyone lives in England. I don’t understand the English system at all.

You don't have to be involved to ask that someone adds the age. It's relevant in most cases when people are asking advice about their DC's.

Hmmnot necessary.

AnneProtheroe · 13/05/2018 16:18

You'll still get people who on seeing "DD, year 9, who is X" promptly ask how old is your DD?

Probably. But i think it's reasonable to ask people to give an age. How other people react to posts isn't anything to do with it.

GoodAfternoonSeattle · 13/05/2018 18:53

Yeah what is KS2?! I’ve been meaning to ask that

NewYearNewMe18 · 13/05/2018 19:13

KS1 - R, Y1, 2 - infants
KS2, Y3, 4, 5, 6 - juniors
KS3 - Y7, 8, 9 - the lost years Grin
KS4, Y10, 11 - GCSE years
KS5 -Y12,13,14 - 6th form

SecretIsland · 13/05/2018 19:18

Year 14? Since when has there been a 14? I thought it was just Y12 and 13 to do A Levels or equivalent and then Uni.

MrsHathaway · 13/05/2018 19:18

KS2 stands for Key Stage 2 - broadly speaking, children are formally assessed at the end of each key stage.

KS1 - 5-7 (also known as "infants")
KS2 - 7-11 (aka "juniors")
KS3 - 11-14 I think?
KS4 - 14-16, GCSEs.

Next week is KS2 SATs, formal exams which are supposed to be taken by the entire age 10/11 cohort (born Sept 2006-Aug 2007). At some point this month all the age 6/7 cohort (sept2010-aug2011) will have KS1 SATs assessments.

This drives me mad. I can't understand why they don't just say the age.

Sometimes the school year is more relevant, for example if there is a question about school expectations. In my experience, school year can also affect maturity and independence, especially in the jump from primary to secondary.

TeeniefaeTroon · 13/05/2018 19:38

The Scottish system is a lot easier to understand. Nursery, Primary 1-7 and then Secondary 1-6.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 13/05/2018 19:58

I always have to think.... The y7 8,9 thing still baffles me...although think overall its far easier... Esp with my old schools system... Where we had three different year 1s!

When I finished school 1983...prehistory I know.... We had infants 1,2 3rd year... Then juniors 1,2 3rd year... Then high school Yrs 1-5, then lower and upper sixth!

Bloody hell. If I was a teacher in England I’d have to write that down and stick it on my wall. I’d never remember it.

Not a teacher (and grew up under a different system) but I know it now. Have one in LKS2 and one in FS2.

It quickly becomes natural and obvious.

MadMags · 13/05/2018 20:47

I haven’t a clue what it all means!
