tips to get off the internet!

I'm annoying myself so much with the amount of time I waste scrolling fb, Instagram and mn! I actually think I'm addicted and can't stop. It doesn't stop me living a real life but any opportunity I get, I'm checking and most the time nothing has changed since I last looked!

I can't bring myself to delete apps which is seriously sad, I know it's probably a common thing but god I wish half this stuff didn't exist. Any tips for weaning myself off?!!

Download the moment app which will tell you how many hours you are wasting per day. This gave me the motivation to delete a few apps and cut back - although I’m still wasting up to two hours on my phone daily! It’s shocking

I tried that moments app but it just made me want to beat my times Grin

narkedwithanarc · 13/05/2018 11:21
  1. Don't make a thread that keeps you checking the internet Grin
Panda81 · 13/05/2018 11:44

I daren't download the moments app. I really don't want to know just how long I spend on my phone!!!

TellMeItsNotTrue · 13/05/2018 11:45

Does anyone have a link or full name for the moments app, or is it not on Android? Would be interesting to see how much I am using my tech and where the time is spent

.
People are attached to the Internet, now.
It's a way of life. It's way past the novelty stage

peachgreen · 13/05/2018 12:12

Make yourself rules. I don't check my phone in other people's houses, in the bathroom or bedroom, or when I have visitors. That rules out quite a lot of time!

Stripybeachbag · 13/05/2018 12:19

I am the same. The internet is now my default activity instead of reading a book or watching tv. I hate it but it is so mindless and easy.

I have started knitting so that my hands are busy. I even take it to the pub so I am not tempted. A good book at bedtime. Also I work with a serious Facebook addict. Thinking of her gives me additional motivation to give it up.

@TellMeItsNotTrue

I think it's this one. It's not out for android but you can sign up for a notification when they bring out the android version.

I got a new watch which is paired to my phone via Bluetooth. It buzzes when I get a text /email/ call etc, so I am spending less time checking my phone to see if I have any new measages- which most of the time I hadn't anyway, but it has become a habit to keep unlocking my phone to check and then lose an hour googling shite

Poptart4 · 13/05/2018 12:27

Can definitely relate to this problem. I've given myself a rule that I cannot go on any apps, sites, MN, Facebook ect. During the day only after 8pm at night - I'm currently sitting by the pool on holiday which is why I'm allowing my self Internet time during the day 😳

This was, is hard tó do sometimes but i really was spending a rediculous amount of time on line and it was mostly out of habit.

Beansprout30 · 13/05/2018 21:36

Thanks for the tips I will download the moment app, I'm not sure I really want to know exactly how much time I spend on here! I hate the thought of my toddler seeing me glued to my phone all the time, I must try harder to put the bloody thing down

I discovered the moment app in an article when searching for ways to reduce time online (the irony..) anyway it was one of a few so there probably is a suitable app for android phones out there

TellMeItsNotTrue · 17/05/2018 11:45

Thankyou for the tag @WhatCanIDoNowPlease in the spirit of this thread, it helped me not have to keep checking back so limited my time online Wink

MissionItsPossible · 17/05/2018 12:20

Google something you're really scared of like a spider or snake, go to Google Images and find the scariest one you can (or get someone else to do it is even better) and click on it, then press the home button. Now, if you want to use the Internet you're going to be faced with your worst fear. Especially scary if it's zoomed in as well.

Likeawolf · 17/05/2018 16:17

The Freedom app is helpful -- you can set it to block you from the Internet for 30 min, 45 mins, an hour etc. at a time. Sounds ridiculous I know, but for those of us who find it difficult not to do just one quick check, it can be really helpful.

MissionItsPossible · 17/05/2018 16:31

The freedom app sounds a bit dangerous IMO. What if you needed to Google something as an emergency?

Likeawolf · 17/05/2018 17:03

Hi Mission -- you can put the Freedom app on for as little as 15 minutes if you're worried or use it on your computer but keep your phone connected (but then that slightly defeats the object of it!) It won't be for everyone but I've found it useful when I really need to concentrate on meeting a deadline.
