Thanks, [Daily Mail www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/travel_news/article-5719097/Inside-Heathrow-Airport-control-tower-picture-exclusive.html]. Hmm

OP posts:

They're not though.

Prestonsflowers · 12/05/2018 23:07

Not all pilots are male.
Can’t read the link

biscuitmillionaire · 12/05/2018 23:10

There are some female pilots. I've heard that the airlines are keen to recruit more women. However, the barrier might be that pilots have to fund their own very expensive training.

PurpleDaisies · 12/05/2018 23:11

They’re not.

Singlenotsingle · 12/05/2018 23:12

It said on one of those airline documentaries that the training costs £100,000

AssassinatedBeauty · 12/05/2018 23:16

It'll be because the very large majority of pilots are still men. Which isn't to excuse the woman in the article referring to pilots as "he", but it is understandable when that must be the majority of her experiences.

RomeoBunny · 12/05/2018 23:17

They have to fund their own training. Boys were (and probably are still) more likely to be encouraged by Mummy and Daddy and their trust funds.

Also it's just another example of the 'Boys Club'. My sister worked for a major middle eastern airline and said the Pilots were so sexist it was like a carry on film.

Also all shagging behind their wives backs. And she'd know, because she shagged most of them Confused

Sorry if anyone's husband is a pilot! He will have fucked cabin crew at some point.

AssassinatedBeauty · 12/05/2018 23:19

@RomeoBunny you can't possibly state that as fact. Of course some men will cheat, but you must have a very low opinion of men if you think they all will.

MadMaryBoddington · 12/05/2018 23:20

I nearly got in to the BA flight cadets, almost twenty years ago. I got right through to the final stage (it was a long process) but got rejected at the very end.

When I went for my feedback session afterwards, the HR woman told me it was very difficult and frustrating to give me feedback because I’d passed everything; but the pilot at my final one to one interview had failed me due to ‘too many small niggles’.

The HR woman was clearly irked about it and said ‘between you and me, he just doesn’t think stewardesses (which I was at the time) should have designs on the flight deck’.

Angry

I don’t think that would happen nowadays. I hope.

GladAllOver · 12/05/2018 23:20

There are female pilots in the RAF too. Some very good ones.

Longdistance · 12/05/2018 23:25

I’m with Romeo, and I worked as cabin crew for 15 years. I wouldn’t touch a pilot with a barge pole, I value my vag to much (and possibly my dignity).

I digress. There is a massive push for female pilots, as yes it is a majority of males.

Bodear · 12/05/2018 23:35

Cant read the link.
@RomeoBunny, stereotyping a gender based on 2nd hand info.... if a man did that about women we’d all call him out on it (and rightly so).

SandyY2K · 12/05/2018 23:38

There are @450 female pilots in the world. They are in a minority, but they do exist.

MerryWoman · 12/05/2018 23:41

No different to nurses being automatically female

InsomniacAnonymous · 12/05/2018 23:46

For those that can't copy and paste here is a clickable link. It's quite an interesting article actually.

BristolGrrl · 12/05/2018 23:48

The pilot who successfully crash-landed the American plane last month is a woman.

I think it's a few factors. When I was at school and University, the type of lads who wanted to be pilots were always a bit 'spoddy' (science geeks), girls traditionally weren't drawn towards those areas. I appreciate it may be different now.

Also, as pointed out above - flight training is very expensive. It is also a huge commitment, plus pilots have to work odd hours. These things may potentially make it less attractive for a woman considering starting a family, I imagine.

BringOnTheScience · 12/05/2018 23:58

Girlguiding is introducing a new Aviation badge (sponsored by EastJet) as part of encouraging girls to be more confident at aiming for STEM careers.

snewname · 13/05/2018 00:00

They only female pilot I've had, overshot the runway and had to go round again. Perhaps that's why there aren't many Grin

duggiehug · 13/05/2018 00:09

Right, snewname, because women drivers, right? DFOD.

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 13/05/2018 00:15

They only female pilot I've had, overshot the runway and had to go round again. Perhaps that's why there aren't many

So when a male pilot is at fault, it's only reflective of that individual pilot; but if a female one is it means all female pilots will be sub par? Gotcha. Hmm

Namesallgone18 · 13/05/2018 00:38

I have been flown (easyJet) by female pilots. In a display of reverse sexism, I feel safer when I hear it's a woman as I assume they'll be a safer driver.

SardineReturns · 13/05/2018 00:43

OTOH Snew, pilot "hero" usa

But maybe that was just luck?

AlexaAmbidextra · 13/05/2018 02:21

I have a female friend who is a captain with BA. She’s certainly not the only female pilot working for them.

Nakedavenger74 · 13/05/2018 02:32

I've been on a few BA flights with women captains or FO's. One notable one the twat behind me scoffed and whined because we had a woman FO 'bloody woman drivers' etc etc.

On final approach he piped up 'let's see how she parks this then heheheheheh'. As it turned out we had to do a go around. I've experienced plenty and it was Perfectly executed. He absolutely shat himself saying 'she can't fucking land it!! She can't fucking land it!!'.

FO comes over tannoy once we were up and calmly explains the go around procedure about how the runway wasn't clear so she needed to do this perfectly normal exercise. Nothing to worry about. Safety first. We'll have you safely down on the ground in a moment.

Perfect landing. Everyone passed her their thanks on the way out. That wanker grumbled and moaned the whole way to baggage reclaim about how he'd never get on a BA flight again as they had women pilots and they weren't safe and he'd go to the papers.

A proportion (not sure what it is these days) of pilots were trained in the armed services - and they have only been taking on women pilots for a certain amount of time, so older ex-services pilots are going to be male. That is one factor I suppose.

That is an interesting article OP. My grandfather was an air traffic controller. He also always said it's not at all a stressful job and I believe him as he was crap at dealing with stress and he loved his work.
