Godfather will question

I did put this in ‘what would you do’, but got no replies.
My husbands godfather died suddenly last year, my husband was very close to him. His godfather was separated from his wife for 15 years, but not divorced. They were still very close, in fact he was visiting her, when he died.

His will was written in 1982, when he was still living with his wife and my husband was 10.
The will left everything to his wife, but if she died before him, my husband then inherited. The inheritance is quite large, but his wife is even wealthier, she did tell my husband, she was surprised and shocked that she was left everything. Also, she is in her eighties and doesn’t need it. - her words!
Probate has just been sorted and contracts signed on the house, my question is - would you give my husband anything? I’m not sure either way, he in no way is expecting her to. But she will obviously die in the future and my husbands godfathers money may go to her relatives. Which I may add , he had no contact with for 15 years. Do you believe he has a moral if not legal claim to any?

No I wouldn't give him anything. A Godfather is to give spiritual support - not an inheritance.

Why are you after this old mans money? It's nothing to do with you.

Thank you, If you read my post, I said I wasn’t bothered either way, and my husband isn’t either, just asking on a moral ground!

No, I think he has neither moral nor legal claim on it. He was not the heir - if his godfather had wanted him to have it, he would have left him at least some if it.

He has about as much claim as the charity that stands to get my worldly goods but only if the named heirs (and issue) have all predeceased me.

What on earth do you think you can do?!

altiara · 12/05/2018 19:51

No moral or legal claim. Godfather chose his wife to inherit everything. She did. The end.

Godfather presumably could have updated his will at any point but chose not to.
