If you win an ebay auction with a last minute bit, shouldn't you pay straight away?

We are skint, so I have been putting things on eBay (this is something I do now and again.) I had an item which was generating a lot of interest and bids, and someone put in the winning bit literally three minutes from the end. That was three hours ago and still no payment. AIBU to be a bit pissed off?

I get annoyed when people don't pay ASAP but I think some people use software to bid on their behalf and so may not see that they've won until they log on.

sonjadog · 12/05/2018 14:05

They probably put in the bid as they were heading out the door for the afternoon. I´d give it 24 hours before starting to get pissed off.

Shutupanddance1 · 12/05/2018 14:06

YABU - it’s been three hours Hmm, give the person a chance!

I don’t usually pay for things straight away as I won’t have my purse on me for my card (I don’t store my details online) - but I’ll pay within the required time.

mostdays · 12/05/2018 14:07

Three hours and you're pissed off? Did you plan to send it the moment you received payment and are annoyed that you've missed the post office opening hours or something?

margotsdevil · 12/05/2018 14:07

I think you are being completely unreasonable sorry! I often don't pay immediately (even if I'm online at the time) for a variety of reasons and I think as long as you pay within 24 hours it's fine. That's as a seller as well as a buyer btw. Have you sent an email confirming postage etc?

lljkk · 12/05/2018 14:08

Post office is closed most places, anyway, or did you plan on taking it to a courier today?
Some folk it's a mental leap how to pay. Plus they may have used a sniper to bid. 10+ yrs ago I'd say that many people just would not pay until they received an invoice from me, they seemed to ignore Ebay automatic reminders to pay.

Fruitcorner123 · 12/05/2018 14:10

YABU I wouldn't be annoyed until at least the next day when it would be ok to send a polite reminder.

ReanimatedSGB · 12/05/2018 14:11

I was actually planning on going straight to the post office.

And I have invoiced. It's just particularly annoying because I wanted the money today.

I always pay immediately for stuff I buy but when I sell I notice most people don't. I agree it's inconsiderate but you need to relax a bit.

ThymeLord · 12/05/2018 14:12

It's annoying when you want the money I agree. Think they've got 48 hours to pay though.

RLOU88 · 12/05/2018 14:15

You’re only pissed off because you are in urgent need of the money. That’s not the buyer’s problem. They haven’t broken any rules it’s only 3 hours Hmm

purplecorkheart · 12/05/2018 14:18

Unless you listed immediate payment required I thing you aibu.

Ruffian · 12/05/2018 14:19

I once got into a big row with a winning bidder who casually emailed me after the auction and said they couldn't pay until the end of the month (about a week away).

When I said I needed the money to pay for something else through paypal she said I should have put that in my listing.

ebay can be such a minefield for buyers/sellers, i don't go on there much any more.

isseywithcats · 12/05/2018 14:20

i run a charity ebay page and i give people a week to pay and also if they pay and you take the money straight out of your paypal account and theres a problem with the sale eg the item gets lost in the post or broken, or buyer dosent want it for a legitimate reason ebay will refund back out of your paypal account leaving you in a minus which you will have to pay back, so when the buyer has paid leave the money in for a week as i find if theres no problem within that time scale usually everything is alright

Pompom42 · 12/05/2018 14:20

I think YABU. I'm not sure how long you get to pay but years ago you got 7 days to pay before the seller could open a non paying bidder case.
3 hours seems really unreasonable

AnnaMagnani · 12/05/2018 14:20

YABU as they probably bid using software rather than in person.

TeacupDrama · 12/05/2018 14:30

you can't opening a non paying case until exactly 48 hours after sale then they have 4 days longer

most people bidding in last seconds are not sitting at desk but have left autobid with gixen, goofbid etc which bids on their behalf about 8 seconds before end, I use them all the time as I might not be in when auction is due to finish etc

YABU they probably left a bid and are out as it's a nice day they'll probably pay tonight

you can only require immediate payment with buy it now

stressed3000 · 12/05/2018 14:38

God your one of those.
I sometimes can’t pay straight away as I’ve might get distracted by a child or have other pressing things (once won you can relax a bit) or it might be that batt is low & I want to preserve it. I’ve also used a sniper thing. I do pay within 24 hours though.

If you want payment straight away then state it in the listing, simples.

I also sell a lot & am happy to wait days for payment as I allow myself a couple days to post.

ReanimatedSGB · 12/05/2018 14:41

Well they've paid now, anyway. And I had no intention whatsoever of pestering them, or complaining in any way. Was just feeling pissed off because I wanted the money. (And mostly I find people pay within a few minutes - it just always seems to be the ones who've won something at a decent price, at a time when I really need the cash fast, who leave it a little while...)

Saturday morning is a lousy time of week to end an auction, true. You got a lower price for doing that.

Any evening sort of 7-10pm except Friday-Saturday is best time to finish. Or list an item Buy-It-Now at high-fair price. I hate auctions & won't bother with them mostly; will pay a reasonable price BIN, though.
