How can I stop this???????

Sorry but this is a thread totally to do with people doing prank call and putting it down. Been getting this for a while and gone through my address book to think who it could be. Today I went out not taking my mobile and the second I got in it rang!! Coincidence??? It is just worrying me and wondered if anyone knew how to bar anonymous mobile phone calls. I have a pink motorola and there are no settings to stop phone calls. Some come late at night or early in the morning. I have a 4 year old little boy and fear for both our safety incase this could be serious or someone trying to have a laugh!! which I do not find funny!!! Any help appreciated

here

Register here & it shoul stop companies calling you, though i'm not sure how to go about barring a landline number or a private number.

TricityBendix · 16/05/2007 23:17

BT used to have a department which dealt with nuisance calls. Now that may have been some time ago but I wonder if your phone service does similar?

Is it always on your mobile? And if so, is it always from the same number? Landlines can have a trace put on them I think, which is worthwhile especially if you're concerned.

lozzawoo · 16/05/2007 23:21

Yeah it is always on my mobile. Have just moved house too so it is a bit scary as I live on my own with my son. U just never know these days. The mobile company have just told me to go to the police to get it traced. Don't know if I should???

Why not? If it's bothering you and it sounds like it is... Do you have suspicions of who it might be?

liquidclocks · 16/05/2007 23:22

I had nuisance calls for a long while at odd times - I suspected it was my ex but never proved. I'm afraid i've no other helpful advice other than I changed my number and just made sure the right people got my new one, told them why and not to pass my number on without asking me first.

Perhaps just ringing BT and/or the police mught point you in the right direction?

mamazon · 16/05/2007 23:24

there are cold calling companies that use computer suystems to ring random numbers.
it dials 4 numbers to every 1 agent so 3 of the calls just hang up.

its very annoying as we had it for ages before we finally found otu what it was.
BT can help with this even if yoru not a customer i think.

liquidclocks · 16/05/2007 23:24

X-posted, sorry- If you've bee advised to go to the police then I would, especially being on your own.

Slightly but my dad did a job when I was younger where we had to be a bit careful as a family re phone calls, unexpected parcels etc - anyway one day an unmarked brown packet turned up and my mum got the bomb squad out - was nothing but hey, if she can live that down then you can phone for advice

lozzawoo · 16/05/2007 23:25

I have a few people in mind to who it might be but don't want to say for sure incase I'm wrong. I did think ex at one point but he also has my landline number so would of thought he would do it on that. If it is someone I know then I would be very annoyed!!

OP posts:
lozzawoo · 16/05/2007 23:28

It is happening everyday though for the past 6 weeks or so and they hang up within a second or two of picking it up. Another option I thought about was not answering it at all and hopefully they will get sick

I know its a pain, but you could always get a new sim card. That way, you know who's got your number. Also, you didn't say if the number comes up on your phone or is it not known?

lozzawoo · 16/05/2007 23:33

no it just comes up with anonymous call when ring so no way of tracing it back. The only thing with changing sim is it could be anyone in phone book on mobile and could drop myself in it again. Just wish it would stop!! More annoying than anything and especially when my son has just fallen asleep.

MaureenMLove · 16/05/2007 23:38

But if its someone doing it maliciously, the chances of them getting your number again are pretty slim. It is a pain though. I'd go to the police tbh, if that's what you've been advised to do. Also put it on silent at night, then it won't wake the little lad up.

lozzawoo · 16/05/2007 23:41

Just to think if it is someone I know how I actually would feel about it. I would want to know tho.

MaureenMLove · 16/05/2007 23:43

You poor thing! I hope you can get it sorted soon. It can't be much fun in a new house on your own either.

lozzawoo · 16/05/2007 23:47

I know!! It wouldnt bother me too much if someone was here with me. but with it ringing the secod a walked in it made me think if anyone is watching me. gonna scare myself now think it would just be best to go to police then at least hopefully it wll get sorted!!

It's worth reporting it to your mobile company - they may be able to remotely block anonymous calls to your phone if there isn't an option on the handset to do this.

lozzawoo · 16/05/2007 23:55

I hope so!! Looked on the phone to see if there was an option to do that but no go!!

OP posts:
ilovebob · 16/05/2007 23:58

You can get anon. calls blocked on landlines so you must be able to on mobiles.

lozzawoo · 17/05/2007 00:00

gonna go to phone company tmoro to see. I really hope they can do this.

MaureenMLove · 17/05/2007 17:34

How'd you get on Lozza? Were the phone company or police any help?

helenhismadwife · 18/05/2007 16:45

definately go to the police, it is nuisance calls and its obviously worrying you.

I had a lot of hassle with an ex constantly making nusisance calls police advised me to change my numbers I did in the end

kittylette · 18/05/2007 16:50

I had 'odd' calls for the first few months we moved in our house, just someone ringing listening to us saying 'hello' the hanging up.

Always number withheld. One day DP hit 1471 (as always) and it returned a number!

So he rang it and an old man answwered.. long story short ... his elderly brother had lived in the house and had died be fore we moved in and BT had just kept the same number. So the old man said sometimes he just gets lonely and misses his brother so he rings the number

He still does it and we just think 'Oh its just Tex' Doesnt bother me.

RedFraggle · 18/05/2007 19:36

I know on a landline from BT they are able to block the last person who called you even if the number is with held. Surely your mobile company can do this too?

In my case I called BT in tears about these prank calls in the middle of the night, explained that the number was with held etc and they said "was it the last number to call you?" It was and they just blocked it.
Bizarrely it was DH's mum we found out weeks later as she was moaning that she got a message saying "this person has blocked calls from you, please hang up" or words to that effect.... Can only think that she had had a few too many or something

Anyway, I'm sure mobile companies have the capability to this too.
