AIBU to apply for promotion while still on probation?

I work in a shop. I have 1 month left of my 3 month probation. Work are now advertising internally for a supervisor. The start date is after my probation will have finished, assuming I pass, which is a safe assumption. I want to go for this. It’s better hours and more money, but I know that people who have worked there significantly longer than me will be applying, so I don’t think my chances are very good. However, I have had some good feedback and they’ve told me they are pleased with my progress so far. If you were my manager would you be annoyed if I applied for a higher role after 2 months in the job and while still on probation? I don’t want to come across as over confident, so WIBU to apply for this position?

I wouldn't have thought you were ready after only 2 months. Nothing stopping you applying.

However the reasons you have given are all about you and not what you can bring to the role for the manager

Lazypuppy · 11/05/2018 20:19

So if they offer you an interview and ask why are you applying what would be your answer?

Godotsarrived · 11/05/2018 20:21

Of course you can apply. Go for it.

I have a first class degree in a relevant area, so I feel I can bring a lot to the company through the knowledge and skills developed from this. I also have years of retail experience, although not at this specific place. I do genuinely love the company and I want to move forwards with them. I appreciate why they’d have concerns about me applying after two months though.

Go for it. I did in a different field, but why not. You can prove yourself quickly.

If you've got retail exp already then I'd say go for it. I've seen people be promoted quite fast. Do you have any management experience already though? The job remit for a supe varies a lot from store to store IME.

My freind got a job as supervisor at aboit 2 months into her 3 month promotion so its well worth trying

adaline · 11/05/2018 21:09

Why not? Even if you don't get it it shows you're keen and want to progress.

ThePinkOcelot · 11/05/2018 21:13

Go for it! Nothing ventured nothing gained! Good luck.

Idontdowindows · 11/05/2018 21:35

Go for it. :)

monkeysox · 11/05/2018 21:38

Good luck 🍀

In my org HR don’t let you apply for a promotion in probation but if this doesn’t apply with your company then go for it.

RavenLG · 11/05/2018 21:42

Go for it, I don’t think you’d have nothing to lose. Do you have a good relationship with management to maybe set up a meeting / chat to discuss.
It’s definately worth it. There’s been roles come up at work I’ve wanted to apply for, colleauge said my manager said I would be perfect for one (after the role closed) but I never applied for it and feel annoyed that I missed the opportunity / was overlooked slightly. Good luck!

Grumblepants · 11/05/2018 21:42

I've worked at companies before that would not allow this while in probation. Best ask your manager first if you can apply. It will show your commitment to the company.

Rainboho · 11/05/2018 21:57

I think you can - I did, although in a different field, started in most junior position. 3 years in, I took over managing the whole department.

Just beware that it will majorly piss off some of your colleagues if you did get it. You’ll need a thick skin.

Rainboho · 11/05/2018 21:59

Just to be clear about my post - I was promoted to supervisor within 3 months and in probation and went up from there.

If there is no rule in your company about it, then you don’t need anyone’s permission to be successful.
