To wonder what will mark us out as old people?

You know how you see old people out and about with stuff that is firmly of their era?
Examples:
Headscarves
Suits
Hankies
Stockings
Face powder
Etc

What do you think will mark us out when we're old? Or are the "rules" so relaxed now we'll just look like the young people but wrinkly?

Im thinking smartphones will have wildly changed but we'll still be doddering around with our galaxies
Straightened hair
Those of us who are smokers will truly stick out and young people will be like "omg! Look! An old woman with an actual cigarette!" a bit like how we feel when we see an old man smoking a pipe.

I have has laser hair removal (full Brazilian) and I have remarked to friends that someday it will look very out-of-date.

Racecardriver · 11/05/2018 19:56

Colourful hair (again?)

Racecardriver · 11/05/2018 19:57

Oh and lots of holes in randim places from piercings

sunshinesupermum · 11/05/2018 19:57

I'm a golden oldie and still buy from Zara, Top Shop, River Island as well as M&S etc. The day I can't buy leggings is the day you can bury me (wearing them!)

Racecardriver · 11/05/2018 19:57

You forgot to update cigarette too E cigarette btws

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 11/05/2018 19:57

Changing fashions mean tattoos are a dead giveaway. You might as well just have your date of birth stamped on your forehead. The cool teenagers now seem to regard them as unspeakably naff and middle-aged thank god.

ferntwist · 11/05/2018 19:58

Positive LOL at cauliflower heads. Never understood why those hairstyles were so popular or why grannies had to sit under heaters for so long to get them.

School12345 · 11/05/2018 20:02

Fake tan.

Young relatives will bring a bunch of grapes and a fresh bottle of St Tropez on visits to the nursing home. The poor staff will empty the bedpans then get to work creosoting the old dears.

MatildaTheCat · 11/05/2018 20:08

When the Care Home has its Christmas party they will have an eighties tribute band playing. Which will be an improvement on the endless loop of Vera Lynn and Bing Crosby they currently insist on despite it being at least a generation out of date already.

littlebillie · 11/05/2018 20:12

drinking gin, wine and beer

littlebillie · 11/05/2018 20:14

tattoo boom is supposed to over by 2020, you will either be old or dead if you have one. We are just on a fashion cycle which is on the wane, when everyone has one nobody will want one. Makes me the think of the star bellied sneechers.

WhiskeySourpuss · 11/05/2018 20:14

Fuck it I'm old already - I was wearing seamed stockings today although I was complimented on how straight the seams were

Boulty · 11/05/2018 20:14

Tattoos
Fake nails
Slugs painted on passing as eyebrows (you know how some people just keep with the 'fashion' that was around (in some areas anyway) when they age
Orange fake tan

Boooommm · 11/05/2018 20:20

pitiless - Having worked as a carer most really old women have bald fannies so you will fit right in 😂

halfwitpicker · 11/05/2018 20:21

Facebook.
Twitter.
The whole gender thing.

MrsExpo · 11/05/2018 20:21

Please define "old" .......

I'm 64, wear size 10 skinny jeans, like a lot of "current" music, am up to date with current affairs and politics, wouldn't be seen dead in a headscarf and have no plans to book myself into a home just yet.

Having said that, the first gig I went to was The Beatles, I watched the first episode of Coronation Street and Dr Who, and I can remember The Queen's Silver Jubilee ....

Am I old? You tell me ..... Smile

halcyondays · 11/05/2018 20:26

I can't remember the last time I saw somebody smoking a pipe. Or wearing a flat cap in the manner of Percy Sugden rather than a thirtysomething hipster.

welshmist · 11/05/2018 20:27

Rap music in the nursing home Grin

Laiste · 11/05/2018 20:39

I was going to say eyebrows and nails.

It's the little sort of things that you can keep going with and not realise (or care) that you're way out of date with.

I too sort or mourn the loss of the beige coated plastic hatted old lady in beads.

My father's mother died aged 93 back in 1999 and she always wore gloves when out of the house. Dark leather in winter and white or cream cotton in summer. With a nice dress. And American Tan tights That was properly dressed to her. Oh and she frowned upon my mother allowing me to wash my hair while on a period :)

AnneLovesGilbert · 11/05/2018 20:41

This reminds me of when we were little and my brother was crying so mum asked what was wrong. He told he never wanted her to look like an old person and asked her to promise not to. We had grannies who looked old by the time we were all born with grey perms and blouses, yes, and they smelled of face powder which I always loved Smile

Mum’s in her 60s now, with long flowing glossy brown hair, bright chic clothes and always great shoes. She never uses powder but has lovely perfume!

I went to the theatre a while back and the audience was a strange combination of groomed well preserved women who all looked 30 from the back and 70 or 80 from the front and their ancient looking husbands. Women in their golden years seem to be fighting off age while their husbands embrace it. It’s interesting.

On the other hand, there are several women in my office in their 30s and 40s who are going grey in style, while I presume their mothers all dye it out.

ZenNudist · 11/05/2018 20:45

My mum is 69 skinner than me and retired with good income so she spends loads of time getting a hair and nails done, shopping with her mates who are younger than her anyway and she has lots of nice clothes shoes and bags. My DPS also go on tons of Intrepid holidays. I hope things was good for me when I'm the same age

BrightonCalling · 11/05/2018 20:46

@AnneLovesGilbert
In a way it's almost a worrying phenomenon: old women back in the day wanted to look clean and tidy, whereas nowadays the struggle to continue lookig beautiful and youthful is a deeply rooted battle.

I'm not sure my gran wanted to l9ok young and beautiful. I think she wanted to look respectable and elegant. In a way, I think its almost a sad thing for women now.

The last remnants of slug-like eyebrows.

GrannyGrissle · 11/05/2018 20:49

Insane slug eyebrows, huge lip fillers and fake saggy tits like two melons in a pair of stockings. Of course faded and shrivelled tattoos and we will all be posing for selfies with our zimmers. With any luck we won't hang onto the sportswear as normal clothes look into our doteage.

School12345 · 11/05/2018 20:49

Because they are fighting to stay visible and relevant. Society doesn't like older women. A man can be as grey, saggy, wrinkly as he likes and still run a company, be taken seriously, treated with respect. Not the same for women. That's why the wives make an effort and the husbands age naturally.
