To think this GP is talking bollocks?

I took dd to the GP with the following symptoms;
Sore throat - this was very bad but is now a bit better
Extreme tiredness
Very swollen glands including ones on the back of her head
Very sore swollen puffy eyes
Slightly nauseous

He said he wouldn't recommend a blood test because she didn't have any of the symptoms of glandular fever

Surely it's feckkng textbook glandular fever?

She's 17

DD (17 and in first year of A-levels) has glandular fever earlier this year and was off school for two months. We insisted on a blood test which confirmed suspicions. However, before we had blood test and whilst I was tearing my hair out with worry, my FIL (retired GP) diagnosed her by checking if she had small red spots on roof of her mouth (which she did indeed). Get a torch and have a look. Lots of tiny red pinpricks all over the roof of her mouth.

If it is glandular fever then high dose vitamin C and zinc was helpful. Also reflexology helped DD lots. Thankfully she's now back to normal and catching up on school work (although did miss an assessed exam piece but got a GP note for it).

I get that you're worried about your daughter, but I think you should trust the doctor. They tend to know what they're talking about. And as others have said, it's only been two weeks. She's probably just having a bad reaction to a cold.

Spudina · 11/05/2018 19:15

Sorry Claire90ftm but that's a bit naive. Some if my patients have been turned away a couple of times by their GP before arriving at my hospital in an emergency. GPs miss stuff too. They are only human.

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/05/2018 19:22

You can get private blood tests for this. Either by seeing a private dr or getting blood drawn at your local hospital (they are supposed to charge you a fee of perhaps around £20) and sending it off by post. medichecks for example is a trustworthy company. They send out the blood sampling kit that you take to the hospital and post results on line. I’ve just had a barrage of tests at a private hospital. They charge £20 to take each file of blood and £60 average per test. EPV could be more. If you’re going the private route, I’d probably pay to see the dr to reduce faffage.

My first port of call though would be to see a different gp next week for a second opinion.

I had GF when I was 20. Missed a good few times as I would have been “iller”. Even my mum didn’t believe me.

I missed a month of uni and needed a GP letter. Please go back and push it a bit. I was totally fobbed off.

I made a full recovery but was tired for a good few months.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 11/05/2018 19:26

Oh and trusting doctors is naive at best, these days. I stopped trusting most doctors years ago.

niccyb · 11/05/2018 21:21

Sounds like a virus. My daughter had the same symptoms with viral tonsillitis and given that you have said the sore throat has improved. It wouldn’t improve that quick with glandular fever x

Peterrabbitscarrots · 11/05/2018 21:33

As an aside regarding a letter from the GP - it’s not an NHS service. Sone might do it for a fee, many don’t do these at all now

Peterrabbitscarrots · 11/05/2018 21:33

*Some

University insisted on a letter from the GP in order for DS1 to postpone his end of year exams. I guess if they didn't everyone would be at it?

The GP was happy to do it thankfully and it cost £20.

Unfortunately he spent a lot of last week very ill and a lot of this feeling better but stressing about getting all the right paperwork to the University.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 12/05/2018 09:15

The school might not even need a letter. Which is why the OP needs to speak to the school nearer the time and ask what evidence they do need.

If the school know she’s ill now and she’s still ill at the time of the exams they might just need to apply for special consideration. The exam board don’t necessarily need anything from her GP at all.

Isthiscool · 12/05/2018 09:18

I'm going to let her sleep all weekend then take a decision on Monday. Thanks everyone

Her eyes have puffed up so much and have become really painful. She's rung nhs direct who say she needs to be seen urgently. Just waiting for a call back!

Oh fingers crossed, she needs bloods and a propert text. Sorry you have been so let down so far xx

Isthiscool · 12/05/2018 18:11

Saw a lovely doc. He said huge tonsils covered in pus, he is going to contact our gp apparently as he was so cross. She has a diagnosis of tonsillitis and the eyes are a symptom. Lots of antibiotics and she is feeling much better just having a proper diagnosis.

GinnyWreckin · 12/05/2018 18:22

Oh good isthiscool. Nothing worse than a crap GP.

Im glad she’s got a diagnosis... sorry she’s ill though 💐

If she’s still ill after the antibiotics, get andother appointment and make sure she drinks lots of water and rest rest rest.

I got ME after GF as I went back to work too soon.... absolutely NOT what you want. Took me 8 years to recover.

Get a note for the school, she may need more time in her exams. Poor lamb, it’s so tough for them anyway without feeling like death warmed up.

Highhorse1981 · 12/05/2018 18:24

Does he thinks it’s glandular fever?

Isthiscool · 12/05/2018 18:27

No - so backed up what the GP said after all that! But the GP looked at her throat and said no inflammation which was clearly not true as her tonsils are covered in pus, although weirdly not as painful as her eyes

greenlavender · 12/05/2018 18:31

My DS had glandular fever when he did his A Levels. Blood tests can't always identify it, so it's a moot point really.
