It's bad manners to leave your car engine running right outside someone's house, isn't it?

I've just moved house, and there's lots of free parking on the street outside. I have no issue at all with people parking, as of course they're entitled to do. But there's one woman who repeatedly parks up for about 10 or 20 minutes, leaving her car engine running. I'm not sure what she's waiting for - there's a school right next to us, but it's not school pick-up time.

It's rude, right?

I am too British to say anything. What are your best tactics for signalling my irritation?

It's not great for the children, but no worse than all those people flying on far away holidays. Easier to prevent than convince ourselves that we should stop flying though!

A woman would do that outside my bedroom window, she would sit there and mess about on her phone. I would be trying to sleep. One day I was in the front when she stopped. I wandered out on to the pavement and looked at her number plate, very slowly.

Haven't seen her since.

However what is also annoying is people who arrive at a house and beep the horn instead of getting out and ringing the doorbell, how lazy can you get?

On the one hand, I'm surprised at posters who say they they they don't have an issue with this. On the other hand, I'm not because people do it outside of my house all the bloody time. It's rude, illegal and bad for the environment. But you carry on pumping out those fumes as you see as your god given right to do (and OP YANBU)

Pop a potato up her exhaust?

😈

Why would you need to stay alert in a parked car? Unless she’s on a stakeout. In which case, she’s doing a shit job of being inconspicuous.

Backingvocals · 11/05/2018 20:42

I get this a lot outside my house - no front garden and lots of late night parking because I live very close to an area with clubs and restaurants.

Until I lived here I would never have known that people sit in their cars with their engines running at 2 in the morning for ages... it’s usually lone men Hmm

Really annoying because of noise and pollution. Extra points for annoyingness if they are also playing some crappy grime horror.

alittlequinnie · 11/05/2018 20:54

All the people saying it wouldn't bother them probably don't need to have to deal with it.

We live right by a church and on a Saturday there are often 3 or 4 diesel cars sat outside my house with engines running - the noise makes the windows rattle and once you hear it it gets under your sking. They often wait for 30 minutes.

Highway code says it is illegal but when I go out and politely ask them to do it they claim there is no way you could hear it inside. I invite them in to have a listen but they decline.

It is awful OP and so unecessary too.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 11/05/2018 20:56

It might be worth talking to the church, alittle. They might address it with them.

AgathaRaisonDetra · 12/05/2018 15:02

Throw a can of paint over the car. They won’t do it again.

I get annoyed with this too. An idling car produces 150 balloons of fumes every minute. I don t know why people do it

As well as being anti-social, research has shown that it’s really bad for the health of people actually in the car, as the air in the car will have a high concentration of carbon monoxide and fumes/ particulates. This is particularly bad for children

Apparently, a few people around the world die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning whilst sat in their car with the engine idling, normally when there is some sort of obstruction near the exhaust such as snow or a wall
