to think it's weird for someone to sit directly next to you on an almost empty train? *lighthearted*

Why do people do this? Choose to sit right next to you when there are only 10 people on the whole train? I mean it doesn't massively bother me but I was sat at a table this morning and this bloke just plonked himself next to me and started eating a very smelly tuna baguette. The carriage was pretty empty. I being my non-sociable-in-the-mornings self like to sit as far away from the rest of the world as I can (bah humbug I know!). I wanted to move but didn't as was slightly concerned he'd be offended. AIBU to think this is weird? Or am I a grumpy sod?!

He's weird, you should have moved. Why worry about offending a stranger.

Queenoftheblitz · 11/05/2018 09:22

I think it's weird and I would have got up and moved. He wasn't worried about offending you with his tuna was he?

CurbsideProphet · 11/05/2018 09:25

It's like when people park in the next space, right up to the line, in an otherwise empty car park. There's probably some science about pack mentality. I call it rude and lacking manners.

Rainydaydog · 11/05/2018 09:29

Yes very annoying I would have sidled off.

Cassiopie · 11/05/2018 09:33

I probably would've had there not only been two (very short) stops left! And this is why people tell me weekly that I'm 'too nice' !! I worry far too much about upsetting other people...

If you want to sit on your own on a nearly empty train then don't pick the popular table seats!

Cassiopie · 11/05/2018 09:39

@Hont1986 there were two completely empty tables and two seats opposite me, also empty!

Last time it happened to me the bloke gave it five minute before starting to grope me

chatwoo · 11/05/2018 09:48

I would have moved. If you feel bad, move somewhere behind the offending person, so you're out of their sightline

ijustwannadance · 11/05/2018 09:56

Yes it is weird. I would've said something or moved as I hate the smell of tuna.

With plenty of available seats I would think he did it on purpose.

0lgaDaPolga · 11/05/2018 10:10

Who eats a tuna baguette for breakfast?!

eurochick · 11/05/2018 10:13

I would move (and have in similar circs). The smelly food would have tipped me over the edge.

dragongirlx · 11/05/2018 10:46

Happened to me on a bus and when I got up to move to one of the many empty seats he followed me to ask why I moved. Was quite scared.

NotARegularPenguin · 11/05/2018 10:48

I would have moved, especially with the tuna.

llangennith · 11/05/2018 10:51

Yes it’s an odd thing to do. I like to think I’d have moved but if it was only for a short while and I knew I was getting off soon I’d probably have just endured it as you did.

Queenoftheblitz · 11/05/2018 10:54

But I think we should move immediatly to get the message across to these rude people.
And don't get me started on crisp munchers on public transport.

HerBigChance · 11/05/2018 17:00

Men who come and sit next to you on public transort when there are plenty of other seats are always hassle or trouble. Always.
