My flat stinks of the neighbours smoke.

Utterly fed up.
We live in a house converted into flats. The neighbour directly across from us moved in around a month ago and he, his wife and their constantly here mates all smoke very heavily (I think possibly weed too but not 100%) which floats under his door across the tiny landing into our flat. The door to his flat is often open for his constant stream of visitors and the small hallway is enclosed and literally stinks. In order to get out to leave for school they have to walk through it.
I have asthma myself and my children have it badly. Our clothes stink and we've ended up with the windows open all day even when it's cold. One of the children has already had asthma medication improved in the last couple of weeks.

Aibu to be utterly fed up but is there anything I can actually do about it?

Are they tenants? The vast majority of rental properties won’t allow smoking, so you may be able to report to the letting agents. But if they own the place, there’s probably not much you can do other than ask politely for them to limit their smoking to certain areas.

I would contact the landlord immediately. While they may be allowed to smoke in their flat, they absolutely may NOT subject the common areas of the building to that nasty stench. I would raise hell about it if need be.

Yes both tenants.
I will try and find my tenancy agreement and see what it says although the agency have changed since mine.

It’s worth checking. I’ve rented a lot of places and I’ve only ever seen one flat that would allow smoking. And that was a dump that already stank of smoke! Very doubtful that a landlord would want them smoking in the flat or common areas.

I've got exactly the same problem, I suffer from asthma and if I have the windows open during the summer I'm always coughing from their smoke and it stinks.

Unfortunately they own their flat and the only thing we can do is move but I love the flat and you never know, it may be exactly the same with the next place.

I would get onto their landlord if I were you and see if you can get them to do something.

You can actually ask advice from environmental health. We once had them round for another matter (gas leak, long story) and she commented on the fact we could smell the smoke from downstairs. She said that if it reaches beyond a certain level the smoker can be asked to reduce it. I imagine it would have to be high level for them to do this and not sure how it would be imposed but might be worth asking?
