to drive at 70mph on this road?

Rubbish diagram attached.

A road near me that I regularly use, has two lanes on one side but only one lane on the opposite (to go other way).

I have always driven (up to) 70mph on the left side, but 60mph on the right side. Was driving with a friend earlier who was shocked and said she only drives 60 both sides as it isn't a dual carriageway without two lanes on both sides of the central reservation?

Am I wrong??

Woops!

to drive at 70mph on this road?

can't see the diagram

but the limit is 60 if there is no central reservation. a head-on collision when both cars are at 70 is not a good idea.

Blaablaablaa · 10/05/2018 18:30

A dual carriageway has nothing to do with the number of lanes. It's a dual carriageway if it has a central reservation

georgeisadinosaur · 10/05/2018 18:30

There is a clear border in between, with a bollard. But not a massive gap?

IWantMyHatBack · 10/05/2018 18:31

Is there a dividing barrier?

Iirc, that's what defines a duel carriageway, not how many lanes there are.

ThereIsIron · 10/05/2018 18:31

What's the speed limit on the road?

IWantMyHatBack · 10/05/2018 18:32

So it's 60mph

higgyyellow · 10/05/2018 18:33

Why don't you know?

Seriously. It's either a dual carriageway or it's not.

georgeisadinosaur · 10/05/2018 18:34

"National speed limit" so no defined speed limit.

OP posts:
higgyyellow · 10/05/2018 18:35

Erm, national speed limit does define the limit Hmm

EscapistTendencies · 10/05/2018 18:35

A border or a barrier? There's a 'dual carriageway' round the corner from my house. 2 lanes either side of a grass verge, the speed limit is 40mph. Surely the road either has speed limit signs or dual carriageway signs?

myhousesmellsofIKEA · 10/05/2018 18:35

Dual carriageway means a central reservation: opposing lanes completely separated by a barrier. If there isn’t a barrier, it’s not a dual carriageway regardless of how many lanes each side of the road has. The speed limit in your case is 60mph.

Snausage · 10/05/2018 18:36

That is not a dual carriageway.

Bekabeech · 10/05/2018 18:36

A useful guide is that "can you roll a tennis ball from one side to the other?" or in other words is there something separating one way from the other direction. Something other than paint!

If so both sides are dual carriageway with maximum speed limit of 70, if not the speed limit is 60. Either way you should stick to a safe speed below the speed limit.

IWantMyHatBack · 10/05/2018 18:36

It is defined though. 70mph on a dual carriageway, 60mph single. This doesn't sound like it has a proper central reservation, so it's a 60 limit.

21jumpstreet · 10/05/2018 18:37

I think you may want to have a flick through the Highway Code and brush up on speed limits OP

georgeisadinosaur · 10/05/2018 18:41

Yes it has a metal barrier separating the two lanes.

goingatlast · 10/05/2018 18:41

"National speed limit" so no defined speed limit"

It's people like you who scare me OP! Have a re-read of the highway code. Please.

Nothisispatrick · 10/05/2018 18:43

Surely the answer is to go the speed limit, which is the national speed limit. If you're in a normal car, that's 60mph. Not complicated.

eyeswideshit · 10/05/2018 18:45

But the national speed limit will change on how the road is defined. That's why she's asking.

RatRolyPoly · 10/05/2018 18:47

I think the OP's right though isn't she, in that national speed limit varies depending on the type of road. National on a single carriageway is 60mph and on a dual carriageway is 70mph.

But I agree, if there is no central barrier it is just the one carriageway so national would be 60 here.

RatRolyPoly · 10/05/2018 18:48

PS not confident on the type of road it is, just following the logic of previous posters.

GladAllOver · 10/05/2018 18:48

It's astonishing how many people have to ask others about aspects of driving that they should damn well know if they are supposed to be qualified to drive.

WelcomeToGilead · 10/05/2018 18:50

National speed limit IS 60

SluttyButty · 10/05/2018 18:51

I don't even drive and I know what the National speed limit is.
I'm quite afraid of someone saying national speed limit so no defined speed limit Confused
