to report this passenger to World Health or at least the airline?

I am feeling quite ill and prepared to be wrong.
I recently flew from Stockholm to Singapore, 12 hours in economy. I got on the plane with a slight cold.
The passenger behind me, a girl in her 20s was really ill , quite obviously with flu. She moaned, coughed, sneezed for the entire journey. At no point did she cover her mouth. I could feel her germs just spraying around me.
Back home ( in Oz) I am now that sick. I have missed several days of work and a whole lot of other stuff. DH is now coming down with it.
Given that I still have my boarding pass so know what seat number she was in (in relation to me), is it worth contacting the airline to report this illness? I am sure that several rows of people around her are now ill.
Or is this just my exhausted fevered brain and everyone just accepts this as the risk of travel?

Have you been tested to see if you have the flu?

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/05/2018 03:22

Bless you. I've had some 'interesting' thoughts while fevered as well. Grin

TeisanLap · 10/05/2018 03:41

Ok ii isclearly my fevered addled brain.

It is. And you obviously feel rotten. But the truth is it could also be the ‘cold’you had that’s made feel so rotten. It could even be that someone sitting 15 rows away from you had a cold that’s made you ill.

I now get bad bronchitis every year. It can flatten me for 6 weeks. I think it’s age related. One of the things I do to prevent it is to not step on a plane even if I have a dose of the sniffles.if I have to cancel then so be it. I still have memories of being hospitalized in Canada for two days with it after I had to call the hotel reception for help. I can also remember how unwell some of my lot were for months after they started their flying careers. It was about 9 months of constant horrible foreign bugs that we’d all go on to get. Getting on a plane can be very bad for your health.

I hope you feel better soon.

Zfactorstar · 10/05/2018 04:07

I just accept that I'm going to be sick after flying. Happens every time. Your in a pressurised tube with recycled air, it happens.

YouCantGetHereFromThere · 10/05/2018 04:10

I'm just imagining her calling the airline to cancel her flight.

"I've got a cold... might be the flu... I can't fly. Can I reschedule or get a refund?"
Airline: "Er no."

YouCantGetHereFromThere · 10/05/2018 04:12

This does remind me of my mum who - whenever she gets a cold - is absolutely furious with whoever gave it to her. She'll spend hours if not days trying to work out exactly which fucker coughed in her general direction. If it's a family member then it'll be Coventry for them for weeks, with phone calls to everyone else letting them know that xxx gave her their cold rather than keeping it themselves, the utter bastards.

TeisanLap · 10/05/2018 04:15

You can very often rebook a flight for a charge as long as you’ve not gone for a ticket resembling a pair of handcuffs. It’s usually not much.

I have to admit my heart sinks when any my children or grandchildren have colds because the thought of how I’ll i could be with bronchitis fills me with dread.

And yes, even though I know better I do actually say things like I think so and so set it off.

This threads reminded me of my cousin who went to The Middle East decades ago and when he arrived back in the uk he had an upset tummy requiring a Drs attention. The Dr heard the words Middle East and immediately though of typhoid and by evening it was on the BBC news - would people who were on this flight pls visit their Dr if they are unwell.

mellowW · 10/05/2018 04:36

I'd log it with 101 if I were you.

PlatypusPie · 10/05/2018 04:54

At the height of the SARS crisis my husband was travelling from Sydney back to the UK, plane was diverted to Darwin, men in Hazmat suits came on and took ill looking passenger off. They were also taking temperatures as you arrived at Hong Kong for a few years after that ( Hong King suffered badly in that outbreak. ) Currently in that part of the world and there were announcements yesterday at the gate for domestic flights about travelling whilst ill, so there are places where someone with obvious flu like symptoms would cause concern.

SabineUndine · 10/05/2018 05:04

Once someone has cold symptoms they are no longer infectious. The infectious phase is before symptoms develop. You didn’t catch your cold from this woman. You already had a cold.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 10/05/2018 05:15

Unless you've suddenly started craving brains or bleeding from the eyes, I'd leave the World Health Organization out of it. Jeez. Hmm

Seriously, I always assume that if I'm on a plane for more than an couple of hours I'm going to get sick, the damn things are crawling with germs.

MardAsSnails · 10/05/2018 05:18

Isn’t getting a cold just part of traveling?

I did New Zealand to back home via Singapore and we had our temps taken in Singapore getting off one plane and getting back on another a few days later. I was ok but I did have a fever a few days later that was checked out.

And interestingly enough when leaving Nairobi last week there were warnings in the airport and at the gates about cold/flu symptoms if you were going between certain countries.

Rollonweekend · 10/05/2018 05:25

Sadly your cold would have been just as contagious as hers at that point, despite hers being at a more developed stage.

Hopefully the person who sat beside you won’t be reporting you Grin

Quantumblue · 10/05/2018 05:37

I think I have been influenced by travel in Australia and Asia where at various points and times there have been requests to make yourself known to ground staff if you have a flu like infection.

OP posts:
Fintress · 10/05/2018 06:09

We had someone like that on our last long haul from Asia, he never stopped moaning, coughing and spluttering. Everyone in a nearby radius was covering their mouth and nose. Sure as hell I came down with something when we came home, my husband didn't though. I would imagine if you had real flu you would be incapable of picking up a device, far less go online. Feel better soon Flowers.

HoldingTheLineWinston · 10/05/2018 06:14

One of us always seems to catch the cold from someone on the flight home..I thought it was the traditional end to a holiday Grin

Cherrysherbet · 10/05/2018 06:19

No, absolutely nothing you can/should do. It's pretty gross sitting near someone who's ill like that for a long time, but it's one of those things. Hope you feel better soon op.

samarkand · 10/05/2018 06:20

We were stopped and questioned entering S Africa as DS showed up as having a fever on some sort of scanner. They did let us in though.

flumpybear · 10/05/2018 06:30

I very much doubt she had flu - probably a fully developed generic virus - flu isn't cough and cold, very different - take paracetamol and ibuprofen for a few days to get over your fever

Bouncingbelle · 10/05/2018 06:44

Trust me, if she had 'proper' flu there is no way she would have been able to get up and go on a flight. She had a cold. As did you.

Give your head a wobble and go back to bed!

SharronNeedles · 10/05/2018 06:50

Why was it okay for you to fly with a cold and not her? Perhaps you're more sick because she had a different strain of cold and it has aggravated yours, but then again perhaps you passed your cold onto someone who's immune system is pants and they're now lying in bed cursing you

PatrickMerricksGoshawk · 10/05/2018 06:54

What? No.

TheFirstMrsDV · 10/05/2018 07:03

Oh my lord please tell me you are not a doctor Grin
