Influencer ethics on Instagram

MadameGrizzly · 09/05/2018 21:56

Continuing the discussion on whether influencing on Instagram is an ethical business model, particularly around the disclosure of advertising and the over exposure of children.

AIBU to think it isn't a sustainable career unless the influencer is scrupulously ethical?

She can't be #real.

NeverWas · 15/05/2018 20:46

FlyingBird I'm so sure she's being sincere Grin

I’m absolutely crying at ‘trial blazer’ and the person taking a selfie with her hand. It literally is an mlm but with no life changing aloe Vera added.

NeverWas · 15/05/2018 21:09

OMG the responses on that thread are BRUTAL. I hope it is a parody.

MadameGrizzly · 15/05/2018 21:10

Just scrolling back, but when I see #spon my mind reads #sporn.

That's my useful feedback to all the influencers reading along.

Mothers Meeting Talents really, really needs to hire a proofreader - trial blazers aside, the English is woeful.

Am I missing something?? Is there a character limit, why on earth would you use "spon" and not "sponsored"...??
Is it in the hope less people cotton on to it?

Reboot · 15/05/2018 21:16

When i see #spon my brain sees spoons.

TheMadHouse · 15/05/2018 21:18

There was with twitter so that was why the abbreviations started

True. Why isn't it #Advert too. It's all sneaky. The ASA are jokers.

TheMadHouse · 15/05/2018 21:20

@garfunkelthecat it was never to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes. Just to be able to get more in on Twitter hense spon and Ad

MadameGrizzly · 15/05/2018 21:21

The same reason #ad is used instead of #AD or #Advertisment. And #aff is used instead of the correct #AffiliateLink. They are more easily hidden.

Some influencers seem very petulant about the need to disclose. I think we will see some dropping out of the game, as it wasn't just about the free stuff, it was also about being seen to lead to a glamorous, wealthy lifestyle to a large audience.

@TheMadHouse thank you, will check it out & yours👍🏼

Reboot · 15/05/2018 21:23

#aff is a joke.

@MadameGrizzly I am pretty sure the abbreviations were never to hide disclosure or make it murkier. But when you only got 140 characters on twitter and that included # and @eveey letter counted

NeverWas · 15/05/2018 21:30

Update: sweary OP has made a small speech. I think she might work for the proof reading dept. at mothers meetings.

garfunkelthecat · 15/05/2018 21:31

But we are talking about instagram not twitter?! Hmm

TheMadHouse · 15/05/2018 21:36

@garfunkelthecat I get that you are talking about Instagram but you asked why they were abbreviated and Twitter was the reason. It set the standard ans many folks auto tweeted their insta posts back on the olden days.

NeverWas · 15/05/2018 21:43

TheMadHouse but it is no longer the olden days and the abbreviations are not clear enough. You did ask what people would prefer to see.

Posts used to appear in chronological order but now the order is dictated by IG and nobody quite knows how it works.
