Influencer ethics on Instagram

MadameGrizzly · 09/05/2018 21:56

Continuing the discussion on whether influencing on Instagram is an ethical business model, particularly around the disclosure of advertising and the over exposure of children.

AIBU to think it isn't a sustainable career unless the influencer is scrupulously ethical?

Absolutely Wolfie. If ever there was an example of style over substance then Instagram is it. Our glossy magazine life promoting non experts in every field..... and then trying to sell you something to boot!

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2018 23:36

It’s true, that is a depressing side effect Wolfie : (

I understand what you are saying Flying but I can't get past what I feel is the motivation behind it. She gets stick for being white, wealthy and middle class and this is her response..... and an opportunity to become a lifestyle magazine. Just doesn't cut it for me. Buying books is always a very good thing though!

I see the birth stories have stopped 🙄🤔

MadameGrizzly · 15/05/2018 08:10

@MarshaBradyo

I'm delicately tiptoeing around this, but do you find any ethical issues with Leandra Cohen's feed? For those playing along at home, she is the brains behind Man Repeller.

MadameG I hadn’t thought of any bit now you’re making me wonder..

On thinking about it more I’m more ok with dc on feeds if it isn’t just building up to monetise their pics. So at around 20% I’m ok up to you. As most of the work is by the actual person

I had thought recently she really us the heart of MR. I follow both and it’s her take on it that makes the feed, which is a good position to be in

There’s loads of selling, merchandise even, on MR but I’m not that fussed about MR and could unfollow without missing it

As an aside it’s weird how this stuff seeps in. Before these threads I had no idea who most of the instamums were. Mod / NB no idea. I’m kind of disappointed I do now, but I opened the thread and was curious so. I guess Mn has that cross over

Also I know people are saying that about birth stories but actually I’d err on the side of the original person on the blog not thinking they would be on a monetised feed with a huge following. It’s not like they get any £ for being used as content, but someone else does

MadameG curious now re L

Oh that I see what you mean. I did feel surprised as I hadn’t seen a pic of her for a while and she had changed somewhat. But then I thought ok I don’t know what’s going on there

Yes true re traffic

superzoomer · 15/05/2018 09:17

Lurker here, anyone follow the frugality? I feel for her as she's just had a baby and seems to get a lot of unwarranted patronising/unhelpful comments/advice, it's one thing for someone to say they hate your rug but it's another for someone to say you're holding your baby wrong or why haven't they got socks on.

I kind of wish for her that she'd keep the baby stuff off her ig account even though the stories/pics are very sweet.

It's like when you're a new Mum and you get loads of unwarranted advice but times a million!

Also quite astounded that mod says she wasn't happy about the potty pic but didn't want to take it down in case it caused more comments?! Wouldn't you rather put up with that and protect your child's privacy? So weird.

nipersvest · 15/05/2018 09:43

I follow Frugality, really like her actually, and yes, she has mentioned about 'advice' she keeps getting via dm's, I guess if it bothers her that much, she could just stop posting baby stuff, featuring it as much as she is currently and having a large following is only going to make followers feel their comments have been invited.

NeverWas · 15/05/2018 10:22

FlyingBird hope you're feeling better today. Totally agree anything that promotes books is a good thing.

Interesting that the birth stories have been ditched again.

That's the problem with the magazine idea - I enjoy the editor's note in a mag. I think you need to explain what you're doing and why, not just leap about trying out anything and everything that other IG accounts have already been doing.

NeverWas · 15/05/2018 10:25

Oh dear MadameGrizzly LC doesn't look well. I can't look again.

NeverWas · 15/05/2018 10:27

The frugality doesn't look very frugal Confused

Jackiebrambles · 15/05/2018 10:39

I unfollowed the Frugality because it was before she had her baby and I felt I just couldn't relate to her beautiful house/pre baby lifestyle! Flay lays of beautiful baby gros and stuff.

And it was at the same points as I read one of the first mumsnet threads and I had a cull of a lot the instagrammers whose feeds were irritating me due to constant ads!

I can well imagine that her feed has turned into more of an insta-mamma one. Keeping babies socks on is virtually impossible though isn't it? :-D

I saw DMBL40 on the cruise! I just scrolled past as #gifted/#ad cruise = yawn but I do usually enjoy her non #ad posts. And her rants. Her lifestyle is nothing like mine but I do find her relatable in a lot of ways (much more than some other fashion accounts).

FleaRiddenScruffBag · 15/05/2018 10:48

Am I the only cynic who wonders about the dms that the IGers talk about. To me they sound like convenient tools to introduce references to other sources eg Mumsnet or devices to shape the conversation on their threads..... uncheckable but oh so useful.

NeverWas · 15/05/2018 10:53

Definitely Flea - same as the 'looking for recommendations' is looking for brand freebies. I assume they were taught these at seminars.

NeverWas · 15/05/2018 10:54

And if any of them are genuine it's even wierder that people are DMing to say aren't they being mean on MN talking about you....
