Was I wrong to tell her?

My uncle quit his job last October as he needed time to do some DIY around the house. I knew at the time because he lives with my grandma (who I am close to). He told me not to tell anyone as he's worried people will start to ask him to do free DIY/odd jobs for them if they know he's not working.

I didn't tell anyone in that time.

But my sister is about to buy her first car and she wants to put my uncle on the insurance as a secondary driver as that usually makes it cheaper (she would be the named driver). When you put secondary drivers on insurance you must enter their occupation. When my uncle became unemployed I took him off the insurance as it increased the premium by 100 quid.

She was going to put my uncle down with his old job as his occupation (as she didn't know he'd quit). I told my uncle he needs to tell her the truth, as having incorrect information on her insurance could harm her if she has to claim. He said he didn't want to tell her. My sister was about to pay for her insurance so I felt I had to tell her as incorrect insurance is no joke. I used to work in insurance which is why I know everything must be 100%.

My uncle is now angry as the family now knows. Was I wrong to tell my sister? I just didn't want her to get in trouble with the insurance company as they pick at anything.

Your uncle was wrong for putting you in that position in the first place. Personally, I think if it was my sister I would have told her.

NeedForBlossom · 09/05/2018 20:47

YABU at all.

wellBeehivedWoman · 09/05/2018 20:47

Your uncle is being really weird about it - he can't expect other people to get in trouble because he's so terrified of being asked to do an odd job?! You were right to tell your sister. It's something her should have done.

NeedForBlossom · 09/05/2018 20:47

YANBU not YABU Blush

Ruffian · 09/05/2018 20:49

Did your sister ask uncle's permission to put him down as secondary driver?

duieof · 09/05/2018 20:50

Yes she did @Riffian I think he suggested it

Who quits work to do DIY? That's crazy.

GymBot · 09/05/2018 20:51

He's being unreasonable. If people ask him to do jobs he can say no unless he was really sacked or something why shouldn't you tell her.

Ruffian · 09/05/2018 20:54

Then you were right to tell her , it could have caused her a lot of problems. Your Uncle just needs to be clear with family that he can't do diy for them.

Weird to leave his job though - isn't he worried about money?

Yokatsu · 09/05/2018 20:55

Is your uncle a bit of a user. If he quit his job what's he living off of? I'm guessing he actually doesn't want anyone who cares asking questions...

MissCharleyP · 09/05/2018 21:05

jengnr that was my first thought! What a strange thing to do.

Definitely NBU OP.

C0untDucku1a · 09/05/2018 21:07

His story doesnt make ssnse at all

BlankTimes · 09/05/2018 21:07

If she had kept quiet, only the two of you would have known.

Nunya · 09/05/2018 21:20

Your uncle is being unreasonable! He is also encouraging your sister to falsify his information by suggesting that she put him down as secondary driver knowing she would have to lie about his occupation and employment. Of course you needed to tell her before she did that. I would think there must be some other reason that he doesn't want people to know that he quit his job other than the fear of an odd job request.

emmyrose2000 · 09/05/2018 21:20

Your uncle is being very weird. All this cloak and dagger stuff on the off chance he might get asked to do an odd job? Is his time management so poor that he couldn't fit in the DIY around his normal work day?

Are you sure he actually quit and wasn't sacked?

As for your sister, you did the right thing. I'd be furious if I had to make a claim, it was rejected because of the incorrect information, but someone knew about it and didn't tell me.

theeyeofthestormchaser · 09/05/2018 21:21

Who quits their job to do diy?

Sounds like there’s more to it. Was he sacked?

He shouldn’t have asked you to lie. Yanbu at all.

juniorcakeoff · 09/05/2018 21:23

Has he been sacked or laid off and he is too embarrassed to tell anyone? Why is he on everyone's insurance? You were right to tell your sister though.

Knittedfairies · 09/05/2018 21:23

You did right by your sister. Your uncle does sound a bit...odd.
