to think that I'm not overweight?

Went to midwife the other day. Was told my BMI is 25.3 and I'm overweight... I've NEVER felt overweight. I am fit, I ran a marathon last year in 3 hours, I walk an hour every day, go to the gym regularly, am a size 10, but my midwife is sure I am overweight based purely on my BMI. Is it really that accurate? AIBU to completely ignore this? Never felt fat in my life and am feeling pretty awful!

Thanks all! Feeling slightly better by my huge thighs lol!

I am a size 8 with a BMI of around 23 but I am overweight. Dress size is not a good measure of weight, it takes no account of frame size. I am extremely small boned, and about 5'2". I should be a size 6, or at least my size 8 clothes should be loose on me. But I have a spare tyre round my middle.

Bobbybobbins · 09/05/2018 20:11

I have a 'normal' bmi but far too much fat around my tummy. Also a size 10. Poor measure of weight.

RexManning · 09/05/2018 20:12

Maybe see if there’s a machine at your gym which will give you your body fat percentage.

Inolvidable · 09/05/2018 20:14

BMI covers a huge range of healthy weights to account for differences between people.

I doubt anyone who ever posted "bodybuilders are overweight by BMI so it's a load of rubbish" has a physique remotely resembling that of a bodybuilder.

What were you pre-pregnancy?

NameChangeCuzImAHorriblePerson · 09/05/2018 20:14

Will you get to keep your notes? Mine got taken away.

CaraDeanna · 09/05/2018 20:16

@user1471459936 I have absolutely no idea!

How many weeks are you? My last pregnancy I was 58kg (5'6) pre-pregnancy, by booking in appointment at ten weeks I weighed 68kg Shock so was overweight! I was, however, still doing more exercise per week than a lot of people do in a year.

CaraDeanna · 09/05/2018 20:19

@user1471459936 I'm 15 weeks! Definitely don't feel overweight but it did make me wonder. Someone below says a high BMI increases risks of complications regardless of fat or muscle Confused slightly worrying but I'm only slightly over!

Tartsamazeballs · 09/05/2018 20:22

Fuck your BMI a 3 h 17 m marathon is fucking goals!

BMI is only useful as a general tool it doesn't tell you percentage of muscle to fat, which is the important bit. You can make a guess that "if person X has a BMI of 35+ they are likely to have more bodyfat" but it doesn't account for individual variations of fitness.

In other words, I'd ignore the shit out of it.

AnnieAnoniMouser · 09/05/2018 20:25

Honestly, just learn to roll your eyes. It’s the begging of being told ridiculous things by a large number of people. It’s a learning curve to trust your own instincts & common sense and ignore batshit comments.

Congratulations on your pregnancy and your marathon! 💐

AnnieAnoniMouser · 09/05/2018 20:28

Bloody iPad will be ‘begging’ soon! I’m fed up of it changing what I type! ‘Beginning’

TatianaLarina · 09/05/2018 20:29

Ignore it OP. According to BMI I’m underweight and my DH is overweight. Except I’m naturally slim and have been the same weight for 30 years excluding pregnancies, and my DH plays rugby and is quite built - no fat on him at all. BMIs do not take build into account.

AnnieAnoniMouser · 09/05/2018 20:29

Someone as fit as you is not ‘at risk’ due to your BMI, honestly, try not to let her comment bother you.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 09/05/2018 20:31

Fucking hell how slim do you have to be before you're classed as a healthy weight.
Size 0 with your ribs sticking out.
It's small wonder we have an epidemic of eating disorders

user1471459936 · 09/05/2018 20:31

Ah, don't worry about it. You are super fit! Try to keep up the exercise during your pregnancy. Do you swim? It helps in the last trimester!

SerenDippitty · 09/05/2018 20:33

BMIs do not take build into account.

Wel they do, sort of, that is why there is a broad range range of healthy weight for any given height. Someone who is a big frame and or quite muscular should be at or near the top of the range. But I agree if you are very muscular you could be a bit over and not overweight.

PoorYorick · 09/05/2018 20:34

Oh, the Bullshit Medical Index. That was invented by a statistician and never intended as an indicator of individual health.

I mean, yes, if your BMI is 35 and you're not an All Black, you'll be overweight. But the BMI is the last indicator you really need to know that. You can tell from your measurements, your dress size and your general cardiovascular fitness.

If you're hovering around the "overweight" numbers (which have changed over time) but you look slim and you're clearly fit, just ignore it.

Shaboohshoobah1 · 09/05/2018 20:35

My best marathon is 3.28. You are my idol misses point of thread entirely it’s damn hard running sub-8 for 26 miles! Bet the midwife can’t do it Grin

thetriangleisarealinstrument · 09/05/2018 20:36

If you know you are not fat then just ignore. What have they actually said? My BMI was measured as 26.5 when I fell pregnant and it wasnt even mentioned. Im clearly healthy and a size 12.
I did have a GTT but that was because i had a close relative with diabetes and that reason was written clearly on the letter when I got it... absolutely no mention of my BMI. (I dont have GD it turns out)

Just ignore. With my first baby the scan woman wrote she couldnt see the position of the baby due to high maternal weight. My BMI then was 20!! I was well offended lol!
Im the same height as you btw.

I just wouldnt worry about this tbh a lot of the time its just check lists they have to go through so you might get written down as overweight even though they could clearly see you were healthy if they used common sense.... they cant use common sense though they have to use their checklist unfortunately!

CaraDeanna · 09/05/2018 20:40

@Shaboohshoobah1 thanks! I'm an ultramarathoner and I actually find marathons harder than ultras. The pace is so much faster and it's a massively tough slog for me! The only thing I've done that I found harder than a marathon was the Fellsman which nearly killed me!

OP posts:
CaraDeanna · 09/05/2018 20:40

@thetriangleisarealinstrument she literally just told me that I am a bit overweight (as she was typing it on to my notes) and said nothing further...

OP posts:
Discoveringpluto · 09/05/2018 20:41

Oh try not to worry at all, you are clearly very fit and have a fab body.

I used to be really slim, so it was a bit of a shock when I saw my notes from my consultant appointment a few weeks ago that said BMI++.
Cheeky bastard Grin Must have mixed me up with someone else HmmGrin
