Light mornings. Grrrr!

Just want a rant really. I'm sick of the lighter mornings already and summer has barely started yet! I've particularly noticed the last 4 days as it's been very sunny from early on. 5am it's daylight, and as I always wake up around this time to go to the loo,I find I just can't get back to sleep again. The last 4 mornings I've lain there for 3 hours then given up. And now I'm bloody knackered. I've gotdark curtains (not black-out ones I admit) and I've tried using an eye mask, but the light seems to 'seep' in at the bottom of it. How do other people cope?

Sorry op, I'm loving the lighter mornings, Grin

Yogagirl123 · 08/05/2018 19:44

I am a really bad sleeper, I have added blackout linings to my bedroom curtains, it has helped with the light in the early mornings.

Lazypuppy · 08/05/2018 19:44

Light doesn't bother me, i just roll over and go back to sleep. I've never really slept in pitch black rooms though

ALongHardWinter · 08/05/2018 19:46

Well Elderflower That was helpful. Grin

Get blackout curtains

ALongHardWinter · 08/05/2018 19:48

Perversely I can sleep with a fair amount of noise going on. It's just light that bothers me.

Same as you winter, my curtains aren't heavy enough and I dislike getting woken up early.

ALongHardWinter · 08/05/2018 19:49

Yep blackout curtains are the way to go I think.

Your body might get used to lighter mornings.

If I struggle to get back to sleep I try Bach's Rescue Remedy Night and do some breathing & relaxations exercises

Op maybe one of these may be the answer to your problem...and it's 4.99 in superdrug, Grin

SnowOnTheSeine · 08/05/2018 19:53

Hah. My 2 got up at 6 today. I lay on the sofa and refused to play with them because it was so early. My 4 year old walked over to the window, drew back the curtain and proclaimed that it was not early because it is so sunny. Grin

Sorry that doesn't help you OP

applesisapple5 · 08/05/2018 19:54

A blackout blind is the best, but you can also get detachable blackout linings if you don't want to get totally new curtains.

cardibach · 08/05/2018 19:55

YABU. Light morn8ngs are not a surprise, they happen every year. Surely you have tried to solve this before this year? Blackout blinds behind your curtains are the answer.

Bratsandtwats · 08/05/2018 19:56

Black out curtains and an eye mask.

I love light mornings as I get up at 05:30am for work. Much more difficult to get out of bed in the dark.

Puffycat · 08/05/2018 19:56

Sleep mask!

BunloafAndCrumpets · 08/05/2018 20:00

We have blackout blinds which Velcro onto the window frames, they don't let even a chink of light in! www.easyblindsonline.co.uk

Kursk · 08/05/2018 20:00

I love light mornings, it wakes me up early, yesterday I was up at 5:30 and got so much more done.

BunloafAndCrumpets · 08/05/2018 20:00

Just realised that looked like an advert. That's where we got ours but I'm sure you can get others!

Saturdaycartoon · 08/05/2018 20:31

OP if you wake up at 5 and don't have to get up for 3 hours you are pretty lucky! Most people seem to get up at 6.30 or 7 latest for work and school etc., and a lot get up earlier than that with commutes.

If you really don't have to get up till 8 ( what am I doing so wrong!) I eventually got some black out curtains for dd last year-- her room faces west and the evenings were a nightmare to convince her it was bedtime! They really do work if they are hung high enough to cover light bleeding up and to the left and right of the window. Didn't buy long enough the first time and had to bring them back. Note to measure properly!

Accountant222 · 08/05/2018 21:44

I just got black out separate linings for my curtains, £20 a pair from Dunelm so it's not a fortune

BeeFarseer · 08/05/2018 21:52

I hate them when I'm trying to sleep. I've tried various solutions, and they're all fucking shite.

Eye masks are great but then I oversleep, or wake up feeling like my brain is exploding when the alarm goes off.

Blackout blinds do the same thing as eye masks for me, just on a bigger scale.

I need some light to help me wake up gradually, so I've settled for one of those dawn simulation alarm clocks (which is bloody fantastic) and a fort of pillows around my head to block out the rest of the light.

PuntasticUsername · 08/05/2018 21:52

You could try blackout film on the windows themselves, in addition to heavy curtains. Just googled and there are lots of kinds available, though I can't see the exact one I used for the DCs' bedrooms. That was just very heavy black plastic material that came on a roll - you cut it to size and stuck it on. It was supposed to stick by itself, but it never did for me - had to damp it all over with a wet flannel, then secure the edges with tape. Worked really well though! In a pinch, you can use silver foil instead (eg to test if it does any good for you, before you fork out).

mrcharlie · 08/05/2018 23:13

Same problem here OP
The bedroom has to be totally dark for me to sleep, even the green display on the clock keeps me awake unless it's covered with a book. But sunrise just wakes me up like a lark...
And yet....and yet..I could lay on the bed in mid-afternoon with the curtains wide open and doze off instantly!!!

Go figure..
