Sitting in front gardens??

curiousgeorgie247 · 08/05/2018 18:21

We bought an ex council house a few years ago. Lovely estate, lovely big houses with large gardens, lovely neighbours.
Most are now owner occupied but there are still a few that are council.
Was having a drink in the sun with neighbours last night in the back garden. It came up about most of the people across the road sit out in the front gardens and we were discussing why anyone would want to when we all have big back gardens. It isn't to do with the sun as they sit out there when it isn't sunny.
We have a driveway now but when it was a garden I would never have chosen to sit in the front garden as opposed to the back.
None of us have ever seen it anywhere other than on council estates. It seems to be a thing.
I'm not criticizing. It doesn't bother me. Each to their own. It just came up last night and thought I'd ask opinions.

You're the one referring to them as council estate people clogs.

FWIW, I rent my house from a HA. Two neighbours across the road use their front garden to sit in the afternoon/evening. Home owners.

HTH.

Gingerninj · 08/05/2018 20:35

I was sat on the step earlier with a neighbour chatting whilst DD played on her little slide. I know most my neighbours and can catch up with them whilst the kids are playing so why not sit in the front

CrochetBelle · 08/05/2018 20:35

Oops, I don't use my front garden, except for the dog to take her last nighttime wee/overnight shit.

austenozzy · 08/05/2018 20:36

I have a large south facing lawn at the front of my house (bigger and sunnier than rear garden, sadly) and only dd uses it with her friends, for ‘tea parties’ on blankets or dumping their bikes on when coming in to play. If I was to sit out there with a cuppa or whatever I’d get some odd looks, nobody here does that.

Actually I once dried my tent on it. Apart from that it’s just a pain in the arse that I have to spend ages mowing. I could keep a boat on it, I suppose.

I’m paraphrasing your posts by actually writing what you’re eluding to. Not to talk about the fact that you and your snobby mates actually referred to them as ‘chavs’.

Love Clogs, born and bred ‘council estate person’.

curiousgeorgie247 · 08/05/2018 20:41

The dude shouting at passing police is a chav. That's a fact.
I haven't been eluding to anything. I was making a point that the council tenants are the ones who sit out on the front. Another fact.

I am a homeowner. I sit in my front garden because it is quieter and sunnier. I can also watch the dc play from here. It never occured to me that I was engaging in chav like behaviour... i will sit round the back from now on so as not to offend Grin

NotCisImaWoman · 08/05/2018 20:46

How do you know they are council tenants op? Do you have a spreadsheet?

curiousgeorgie247 · 08/05/2018 20:46

It's pretty obvious which houses are and which arent. I don't need to see their tenancy agreements.

Ohmydayslove · 08/05/2018 20:51

Yep council house kid er from Brum so you may need smelling salts op.

Mom and dad sat out the front when we was kids to keep and eye on us and being responsible they only fagged outside. On a mattress of course Hmm

WhatsGoingOnEh · 08/05/2018 20:51

My road is half council, half private. You can easily tell the council properties because they have their lawns mowed by the council gardeners.

EmmaJR1 · 08/05/2018 20:51

I live in quite a "naice" area, opposite a marina. The houses all have massive long front gardens and tiny back gardens.

Nearly all the houses have lovely seating in the front gardens to make the most of the beautiful view.

I often sit on a blanket with my baby and dog and enjoy the view.

curiousgeorgie247 · 08/05/2018 20:52

They all had new identical front doors a while ago fitted by the council. They're also the houses that had their roofs replaced at the same time. Shock horror by the council 6 months ago. The council vans are usually visiting to carry our repairs etc. Aside from this. We all know eachother and when we bought the house and were looking at sold prices for the road they're all listed online. To name a few.

It's sociable. And some people wouldn't otherwise see anyone to talk to day to day if they didn't do it.
I used to live in a new build estate and in the summer a lot sat out the front.

How is it obvious? Does your snob detector go off whenever you’re near a council tenant? Does it screech ‘shops at Iceland! Has a child named Charlee-Mae! Has no clothes from Boden! CHAV CHAV CHAV’.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 08/05/2018 20:57

Its quite commonplace to do this. Very popular in the USA with their big porches.

curiousgeorgie247 · 08/05/2018 20:57

We wernt judging anyone. Well anyone other than the loud one blasting his music all day and arguing with people who generally pisses the whole street off. Owners and renters alike.

OP posts:
EdmundCleverClogs · 08/05/2018 20:59

We all know eachother

All of you know each other? I take it none of the council tenants were special to be at your vair naice back garden party. Perhaps if you invited all of your neighbours over instead of judging them from afar, you’d have your questions answered by them.

curiousgeorgie247 · 08/05/2018 20:59

We were just having a conversation about why some people choose to sit in the small front gardens as opposed to the lovely back gardens we are lucky to have.

I didn't have a party to incite people to clogs. The couple from next door just came over. Why you twisting?
