To think 9-5 jobs are a thing of the past?

Currently on a temp job and looking for a full time role in London, and the standard hours of almost every job I’ve seen are at least 9-5:30, most of them 9-6 or 8:30-5:30, one of them is 8-6!

So is 9-5 just not a thing any more, or is it just that prospective employers don’t think people need a work/life balance?

In private sector, always at least extra 30mins everyday. i.e. 9am - 5:30pm or 9am - 6pm, 1 hour unpaid lunch.

I do 8.30-4.30 and am in the NHS. I'm an 8a (salary 40-47k) and to be honest now and further up the rungs I expect to have to do more if required. When I was a 7 I expected to only have to do my 37.5 hours but more leeway is expected the higher you go.

I wish employers would take work-life balance more seriously. Surely happy, well-rested employees are more productive?

Also wish there were more options that fit around childcare/school hours. My previous job could easily have been done by 2 part-time people instead of 1 full-time, but they wouldn't consider it. That means they're ruling out a lot of potential employees who only want part-time hours. It's quite a skilled job, so the pool of talent isn't huge to start with - I'd have thought that offering flexibility is in a company's best interest. That particular company is now full of lots of quite stressed full-time people, and turnover/burnout is high. They're really struggling to recruit for the most recent roles.
