Sorry if there is another thread about this, I couldn't find one.

But seriously, just no?!

Reminds me of the Bible story of the three talents

ConstantlyCold · 08/05/2018 18:29

It’ll never happen, anymore than getting baby boomers to pay for their increased use of the NHS. Sadly

I agree that there’s not a snowballs chance in hell the governement are going to start giving £10K worth of tax payers money to 25 year olds. But maybe services will get shit enough for baby boomers to contribute more. I know the dementia tax idea wasn’t received well —massive understatement— but something like that is needed. Maybe it will become more palatable in time.

MightyMucks · 08/05/2018 18:39

It won’t happen but I think something does need to be done re inter generational inequality.

Nothing needs to be done because we have this lovely little thing called ‘death’.

BlueKarou · 08/05/2018 18:39

Not sure what the original story is, but I'm a little shocked that apparently I'm a millennial! I'm 33, in my head the millennials are all 18-early 20s.

I can't speak for my entire generation, but I can say for sure that I am more in need of £10k than my parents are. Where do I have to go to get it?

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 08/05/2018 18:42

Someone's shitting themselves about the yoof vote.

We have an aging population putting more strain on the NHS & a smaller pool of tax payers, this is only going to get worse as people have less children. Unless everyone dies at 70 I’m not sure death is a viable solution.

Tigerpaws57 · 08/05/2018 18:43

I am sure you are in need of it bluekarou but it is only proposed for 25 year old millenials. So how can that be fair?

OrcinusOrca · 08/05/2018 18:44

Willets was proposing a grad tax before I went to uni because my generation wasn't covering enough of our debt. Funny how ten years later he now thinks my generation need free cash Hmm

Godowneasy · 08/05/2018 18:49

@CarrierBlue-
Because that would be fair, how? Hmm

WeWere0nABreak · 08/05/2018 19:11

It's neither here nor there. Not enough to make an actual difference, e.g. a deposit in many parts of the country or to pay off student loans.

IfNot · 08/05/2018 19:16

I want 10k!
It's half a deposit where I live! I'm over 40 and still don't own a house..so I have to put up with wrinkles and cellulite AND no 10k?

leggere · 08/05/2018 19:16

Parents with young children should pay extra taxes for NHS. They use it more than anyone.

Oblomov18 · 08/05/2018 19:20

Will never happen. Hopefully. Why not reduce Uni fees, for starters?

muttmad · 08/05/2018 19:21

Its a crazy idea, a 25yo high earner would get £10000 yet a 26yo on minimum wage would get nothing!

There are people in every generation that are unable to get on the housing ladder etc, how is it fair to only help one generation?

MoneyWhatMoney · 08/05/2018 19:26

I haven't heard / read this story but what a silly idea!
I am 32 and don't own a house. £10k would be lovely, but if it's to help people get on the ladder, surely more access to affordable housing would help? Manageable mortgages, less emphasis on having a large deposit, and I think having confirmation that someone reliably pays their rent in full and on time over a decent amount of time should count in your favour!
Giving 25 year olds £10k just seems like a random stab in the dark to try and get the youth vote tbh

WazFlimFlam · 08/05/2018 19:46

Keep your hair on. All the money will go to baby boomers anyway when it is used to buy their homes off them for stupid prices.

FaFoutis · 08/05/2018 19:48

True Waz and they will spend it on cruises and shit.

Jellykat · 08/05/2018 20:05

Most random thing i've ever heard!
Great for 25 year olds, gobsmackingly unfair if you're 26 +

ConstantlyCold · 08/05/2018 20:06

I doubt that. I’ll bet 100 random 3 year olds use less nhs services than 100 random 83 year olds.

user1471517900 · 08/05/2018 20:11

I think it's a fantastic idea. Someone has actually done research to show this would work and the youth really deserve something. They're getting absolutely screwed here and this would really help. I'm totally for it, my generation has had it hard enough and I'm in thirties. I'm all for youngsters getting an actual chance to make it and give them a chance to move up in the world.

FunkyHeroCat · 08/05/2018 20:15

Sorry, but that totally has to be called out - the wards are not full of children (unless you're at GOSH) they're full of older adults with diabetes, hip replacements, heart problems, cancer etc. The expensive stuff.

The older you are the more likely you are to use the NHS a lot. Young children barely see it apart from at birth and for the odd GP appointment.

Where exactly do you get your (mis)information? I've worked for the NHS for about 25 years btw.

MorganKitten · 08/05/2018 20:16

Millennials are 1980s as starting birth years and the mid-1990 ending years... where can I claim my 10k please?

BlueKarou · 08/05/2018 20:18

Well dang it, if it's 25 year olds only then that's a lot more weird than first thought. It's a strange token gesture rather than a generational thing.

BIWI · 08/05/2018 20:22

It's a stupid, ill-conceived idea. And as for this:

getting baby boomers to pay for their increased use of the NHS

I think you'll find that every generation has increased need of the NHS as they get older!

And let's not forget, the baby boomer generation gave birth to the millennials/gen z generations - and will be paying for them already! Neither of my DC will be able to afford a mortgage, and so we're having to help them out financially.

makingmiracles · 08/05/2018 20:23

Too true @funky I was watching “hospital” the other day (big trauma hospital) and he was saying something like 93% of their patients are over 70, we have a massive problem brewing, has been for a couple of years and will get increasingly worse with the amount of aging elderly people who are living longer and needing more health care.
