To consider giving son a weeks notice?

I have an adult son who came back to live in the family home just before Christmas. He's a very cheerful jack the lad type, not married and no children, (aged 40). We agreed he'd pay £80 pw as a contribution towards household expenses (gas, electricity, WiFi etc). On 7th January he lost his job. He's a s/e property maintenance man, doing plumbing, roofing, window and general house repairs.

In March he got another job in London, very well paid but he changed his hours from a 8.00 am to a 10.00am start because we live 50 miles outside London and he was finding it hard to get up. So far I've had no money from him as he needed to get back on his feet. This morning he told me he's got no money and won't go back to work until pay day, over a week away. He still came home yesterday with tobacco and beers! AIBU to give him a weeks notice to leave? I feel I'm being mugged off! Or has anyone got any better ideas?

Tell him to jog on OP, he'll lose this job too if he's not going in. If he's well paid and not giving you anything for rent where is his money going? Does he have a gambling or alcohol problem?

Maybe you could have a talk about his behaviour & contributions and see if anything improves ? Making things worse for him by kicking him out won't help him get out this rut he's in.

He's still your son and being a parent doesn't stop when your kids turn 18, it's a lifetime title and as he's not married you're still his next of kin.

He's 40 not 21, you need to be straight with him, he needs to behave like an adult, budget for his own commute costs and start saving to move out. Maybe give him more than a week but he needs to start contributing from his next pay packet and you need to see that he is taking responsibility for himself, he is taking you for a ride
