To take the "long" route from Kings Cross to Heathrow?

I have to go to the airport after work tomorrow. My office is about half way between Kings Cross and Paddington. In theory, I appreciate that the best option is to go to Paddington, and take the heathrow express. But a) it's so expensive and b) does it REALLY save that much time? Thoughts?

Heathrow express - 15 mins
Picadilly line - 45 mins plus scrabble for seats plus fighting other travellers for luggage space.

I've taken the Piccadilly line route before over the Heathrow express, it is a lot cheaper but depends what time your flight is, will you end up being rushed at the airport? Also as Duchy says if it's rush hour and you have a big suitcase you won't be popular!

I would say that the tube will be hot and very crowded at that time of day, and if you have anything bigger than a tiny carry on you will be uncomfortable on the 45 mins.

With the Express you're paying for a bit of comfort and relative calm. Is that worth £25 to you?

It's unbearably long on the piccadilli - if work are paying I always use the Heathrow express. Downside of Heathrow express is that it can be really unreliable.

Basically we need cross rail to get a move on!

Heathrow Express faster. 15 minutes to T1-2-3, 20 mins to T5. But if you are not in an extreme hurry, Piccadilly line is fine. 25 mins extra is not the end of the world. I prefer getting on at Green park (while I am nearer Kings X).

Thanks all. I will have a small suitcase, slightly bigger than hand luggage. But the point about rush hour, luggage and crowding on the piccadilly is a good one. Probably better therefore to do the express. That's my problem with Express though @thingvellir - I have always found I land up waiting for one to leave, then get delayed etc. So it feels counter productive. But the craziness of the Express at that time of day, in this heat, with luggage is probably not worth it.

I meant craziness of piccadilly.

I just use the Piccadilly - never found an issue getting a seat fairly soon and then just read my kindle for the journey!

You could get a Heathrow Connect train instead of the Express, from Paddington. Takes a bit longer as it stops on the way but is only £10 rather than £25. www.heathrowconnect.com/
