I have made a pond with tadpoles and I am hoping they will grow up / and decide to stay and eat them !
Otherwise I have given up but might try the beer tip

Crushed egg shells and a hedgehog

You can make your own nematode thingy:

I have ninja snails. They are currently hiding out in my Broom (plant) looking uncomfortable. They have also managed to reach my first floor window boxes.

ToadOfSadness · 07/05/2018 22:45

@MereDintofPandiculation there are several articles online about making nematode 'soup'. The Telegraph one mentioned above is the first one I ever read.

ToadOfSadness · 07/05/2018 22:47

I don't like the idea of killing spiders and other insects so won't use diatomaceous earth where it can be accessed, even if the bees don't touch it, it can blow about.

Lilyhatesjaz · 07/05/2018 23:05

I pick them off the plants and put them in the compost bin in the hope they will like it so much they will stay there.

BlackeyedSusan · 07/05/2018 23:06

beer traps. they will die happy.

it is the little tiny black ones that live insoil that are the problem, not the bigger orange bellied monstrosities.

willyloman · 07/05/2018 23:11

Hedgehogs

The smell of decomposing slugs is one of the worst smells ever. Made me wretch.

Sprinkle coffee grounds anywhere you have a problem.

Harebellmeadow · 08/05/2018 13:06

Just remembered I have a huge pack of rabbit hutch sawdust which would work well in this dry weather. Coffee grounds also good but like sawdust and eggshells, only till the next rains 😕
I do have frogs and newts in my garden and gladly sacrifice many plants for their wellbeing.
What I find also helps a little is planting seedlings or seeds in cut-off plastic water bottles, with a sea of sand/eggshells/coffee around it. This increases the chance of the plant growing a bit taller before the slugs can get to it. Didn’t work for my beans however, the slugs managed to climb upwards and gobble everything overnight 😩
