To quit my job without a job

I really don't like my job. I got it through a recruiter after I lost my other job and I saw it as a way to earn money until I found something else.

Soon after starting I realised the duties were very different from the job description. The job description made out I would be doing support tasks, but in reality I am doing most of the work while being on the lowest salary there. I thought it would be okay to stay until I found something else, but I work 9-6pm Monday to Friday and I can't get any time off for interviews. I thought I could use annual leave, but my manager says I must give SIX WEEKS notice for a day off, as even a day could cause the work place to fall behind without proper cover in place.

My probation period is almost up, and my notice period goes up to two months (as opposed to one month) if I pass. But I am thinking of just leaving as I can't see any way to find another job while I stay here.

Is this a very stupid thing to do?

As long as it doesn't leave you homeless or starving then it's not a stupid thing to do. In fact sometimes it can give you more of a push to find the right thing. I left my job two months ago without another lined up and start a new, and much better job, next week.

If you can manage financially for a while, then yes, pack it in.

6 weeks' notice for a day off is ludicrous, isn't it?

Scrabbler3 · 07/05/2018 17:35

Not stupid, if you've a few quid in the bank and jobs are plentiful in your field where you live. I'd ask some recruiters what the market is like.

HectorlovesKiki · 07/05/2018 17:38

Could be stupid but might be the best thing you've ever done.
Could you manage financially for any length of time?
If so, hand in your notice tomorrow.
If you choose to leave a job, you cannot claim unemplyment benefit for several weeks, I'm unsure as to the exact timescale.
Are there many similar jobs available to you or perhaps you could diversify?
Good luck whatever you decide.

I have some savings and DP earns a decent amount so I wouldn't be homeless, no.

I have never had a problem bagging interviews as I am quite open minded within my field, and I am not looking for an especially high paid job. I'm confident I could find something but I want to find something I like with a degree of flexibility as I feel suffocated and restricted in my current job.

Sign back with agencies and go short term temping first. Then leave

If you are secure financially to cover the time off work then yes, do it. I quit a job after just 3 days because it was awful and I've never regretted it, but I was only able to do that because we were secure financially.

If you can afford it, I'd say go for it and hand in your notice.

I left a job that was making me miserable just over 3 years ago. I had been having interviews for other jobs, but although I was ever so careful to be professional about my old employers, I suspect that there was a slight air of desperation about me! Also my confidence was v low.

It was scary not having a job to go to (I've never done it before) but after a couple of months I'd picked up some freelance work, then got a maternity contract which turned into a permanent job which I love.

Your current employers sound so inflexible, would definitely hand in notice before your notice period goes up.
