To consider going private under these circumstances?

I have 19mo twin boys. One of them has had an obvious squint since late last year, which has worsened massively so that it’s now constant and more severe.

We were referred to the hospital in January and seen in March but it turned out this was literally just to look at him and say “oh yes, he definitely has a squint” and refer him to the actual consultant. That appointment isn’t until the very end of June.

In the last 6-8 weeks we’ve seen a significant change in him. He has stopped playing with toys and just wanders up and down all day. It seems he may be going through some kind of regression and he’s been referred for that but I’m wondering if it could actually be related to his vision.

I’ve found a private ophthalmologist locally who specialises in paediatric stuff so I’ve contacted them to find out costs. I’m sure it will be expensive. I’m just thinking that if all this is related to his squint, how much worse could it get in just under a couple of months.

Would you pay to go privately if your nhs appointment was nearly two months away? We are not very well off but could find the money.

If I could afford it, I would go private if an NHS appointment was too much of a wait. However, I'm not sure of the likelihood of the other things you've mentioned being related to the squint. How long will you have to wait for the other referral?

Not sure - will probably be a while I would have thought. Just wondering if blurred vision might make it difficult to play with shape sorters and things like that now. It’s hard to say if it’s related really but it’s worrying me.

Could you try speaking to the consultant's secretary? Sometimes they can bump you if there's a good reason. Worth a try
