AIBU to think glasses are magic...

Ok maybe not magic, but I got my first set of glasses today. Thought I only had a minor issue reading tv subtitles. Suddenly the world is sharp, and far too weird. I don’t know if I like it, it’s too much!

Ok no one, I’ll letmyself out...

It’s a very marvellous thing when you suddenly realise the world is not as you know it!
I wear glasses and sometimes prefer to leave them as everything looks nicer blurred!

Whyarealltheusernamestaken · 06/05/2018 03:41

I’m on day one, managed an hour, too much change!

I’ve worn glasses since early childhood. I love not wearing them sometimes, so I can be in my own little cocoon!

tombstoneteeth · 06/05/2018 04:08

Great, isn't it, seeing clearly for the first time! Great, but overwhelming! Enjoy it, as it will come right very soon and that feeling of almost being a voyeur on the world goes away!

I remember when I first got my glasses my depth perception was way off for a while. I had a few embarrassing misjudged how big a step was needed to walk up the kerb moments. (I over estimated and would take a massive step which obviously wasn’t needed). I also had some walking into bins/ lampposts etc moments as my brain hadn’t yet caught up with my improved vision.

Battleax · 06/05/2018 04:23

Go and find a leafy tree to stare at. It’s mindblowing when you’ve been in a blur Smile All the individual leaves so sharp.

rovi66 · 06/05/2018 06:06

They are. I'd always need a stronger prescription year-on-year. THat amazing sharpness with new lenses is amazing too.

LASIK is even more mindblowing!

QuiteChic · 06/05/2018 06:09

The most wonderful thing is when you take them off and look in mirror you're 35 at most ! No bags, wrinkles, lines etc.

Figmentofmyimagination · 06/05/2018 08:11

I'm extremely shortsighted (not even allowed to drive) but as I get older, my reading vision without glasses has become wierdly clear, so that on the train, I take off my glasses to enjoy my book, but can barely see the shape of the person sitting next to me. Very odd. Like being in a cocoon.

Eminybob · 06/05/2018 08:20

I remember getting my first glasses when I was 10.
I was watching telly with my mum and dad and kept taking them on and off and saying stuff like “I would never have known there were buttons on his shirt” etc.

These days I wouldn’t even know there was a television in the room without them, let alone buttons on a shirt!

I wear contacts now which are even more magical - how can such a tiny piece of plastic make me see perfectly??

donthaveascooby · 06/05/2018 08:24

And now that you have experienced that lovely clarity it will get harder to accept the blur again which is why a lot of people will say wearing glasses has made their eyes worse Smile

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 06/05/2018 08:29

I have long sight. Without glasses, I can see every wonky tile on the house over the road.

TookyClothespin · 06/05/2018 08:33

I find it odd every time I get a new prescription, but doesn't take long to get used to it.

ToadOfSadness · 06/05/2018 08:33

Am a bit groggy from lack of sleep and wondered why a set of drinking glasses was magic, then I realised you meant a pair of glasses to bung on your face.

When you have been walking around in a very blurry world it does make a difference, much like having cataract surgery, if you needed them really badly.

StillMedusa · 06/05/2018 08:34

I'm very shortsighted ..got glasses at 5, and now I'm older I need varifocals, and I have often thought about how amazing they are.
A couple of hundred years ago I would have been very disabled by my poor vision as I can only see a few inches clearly.

My DD1 got her first glasses 2 years ago, and I remember her saying 'OMG are those STARS?!' She'd never seen them clearly!

FluffyMcCloud · 06/05/2018 08:36

I remember my first glasses and like a pp said the thing that blew my mind was trees - all those lovely little leaves! Not just one big green blob! I was 19 when I got my first pair and remember so clearly the moment I put them on. Yeah, I’ll go with magic too, OP! Brilliant!

IWantMyHatBack · 06/05/2018 08:39

Yes, go and find an amazing tree and lie under it for a while.

HonkyWonkWoman · 06/05/2018 08:40

Yes I know what you mean, I remember everything feels just too sharp and too much.
After glasses, I wore contacts for years and thought they were good, then 2 years ago had Lasik eye surgery.
Amazing! The best money I have ever spent.

SayNoToCarrots · 06/05/2018 08:40

I call it HD vision

OddS0ck · 06/05/2018 08:42

I was with my daughter when she got her first glasses at the age of 20.

She was blown away! All the way home - through a forest - she was exclaiming with astonishment at what the world looks like! Magic alright.

I miss dirt in my house if I don't have my glasses on. That can be embarrassing retrospectively.

EasterRobin · 06/05/2018 08:42

I remember everything suddenly looking like photographs with lots of sharp detail like individual leaves. Who knew people actually saw the world like that? It was a hell of a shock.

UnimaginativeUsername · 06/05/2018 08:48

I can’t see anything without my glasses.

I’ve just booked a (somewhat hopeful as my prescription is over -5 and I have astigmatism) appointment to be assessed for orthokeratology. It sounds like actual magic: wear lenses at night and you can see when you take them out. I bet they decide my prescription is too high (although the manufacturer’s website claims I’m suitable).

femfemlicious · 06/05/2018 08:48

I wear glasses but they broke a few years ago and somehow never got round to getting a new pair. Wore contacts hot a while but haven't bothered for about a year now.

Now I'm scared to wear them and see how dirty my house actually isBlush

I'm gonna bite the bullet on a day that I have the time and energy to deep clean.

LittleMonkeysWideAwake · 06/05/2018 08:53

I only wear my glasses when I really need to see! I.e. In the car, watching my kids swimming or sports day etc... The rest of the time it's too much and I prefer to b in a bit of a daze!

Weirdly, contact lenses didn't make me feel weird and I enjoyed the sharpness! You could try that option! I can't wear them now as my eyes are too dry and my stigmatism too bad for comfortable lenses!
