Another classic that really hasn't aged well.

Tartyflette
Yes, I know that. Thanks. My mistake. I was actually answering the questions “who is saffy” upthread. 🤪

ToeToToe · 04/05/2018 21:02

There were some moments of sheer genius in that show - but I haven't watched it for years. I think it's on Netflix - I might give it another watch. Now I'm a mother, it might make me cringe a bit.

I remember when it looked like Patsy & Eddie were really raving in a club, music, drinks, flashy lights etc - and then Saffy comes in and puts the light on and they're in the living room "Mum! I'm trying to sleep" Grin

I liked it a lot back then, but I don't find it funny really now. There are still some great moments, but generally, it seems so slapstick and ott now. I think it shows how tv humour has evolved more than I realised over the years.

ghostyslovesheets · 04/05/2018 21:08

Serge is basically Saffy as a man!

eightfacesofthemoon · 04/05/2018 21:08

I love it even now. It’s dated badly, but in an ironic way I think
And no she wouldn’t be on any list. she has rich parents! You can be a shockingly bad parent and as long as you have money you’ll be fine

ghostyslovesheets · 04/05/2018 21:09

but gay!

ghostyslovesheets · 04/05/2018 21:11

Eightfaces I can promise you that's not true - I know from my job!

Saffy had a lot of protective factors around her plus she had options of family to live with and she was older - lots of alternatives to being in care!

elQuintoConyo · 04/05/2018 21:14

I love the France episode and when Patsy realises she's been snorting baby powder thus must have actually enjoyed ping pong Grin

And when she's banging on the door demanding Border Security retest it- 'I paid a lot of money for that!' Grin Grin

Am laughing at 'looks ott now'. Looked madly ott then! That was its joke, wasn't it?

MarthaArthur · 04/05/2018 21:19

No she was too old 17 i think. The one where eddie and patsy get married Grin

MarthaArthur · 04/05/2018 21:20

In fact child protection would be more interested when eddie "adopts a baby from Romania and they turn up with loads of them 😂

ghostyslovesheets · 04/05/2018 21:23

what about Idris Elba as an escort !

Tartyflette · 04/05/2018 21:31

Never mind Saffy -- the RSPCA didn't even get involved about the dolphin! Even though it had 'fin flop'...

TomDonaldson · 04/05/2018 21:33

Martha it's OK, that was a dream in the isolation tank

user1473878824 · 04/05/2018 21:34

Not a.... FISH FARM!

thetriangleisarealinstrument · 04/05/2018 21:38

I used to be horrified with their behaviour and really sympathise with Saffy when I was younger... but actually as I grew up I sort of see them as icons of female friendship and also in Eddies case as actually trying in her own way to be quite supportive of her daughter. Obv she does some terrible things and is very flawed but she clearly loves her daughter very much. I have a lot more sympathy for her now
Obv its all exaggerated for comedy and no one would actually behave like any of them and get away with it in real life.
Its interesting in that episode where Saffy puts on that play about them expecting to illicit sympathy and instead everyone just responds to how funny and engaging the characters are.

I think the whole point of the show was that all of them are deeply flawed but there is this sense of being on their side somewhat. I mean they are incredibly well loved characters and its not just that people love to hate them.... they do have qualities which people respond to I think.

Iflyaway · 04/05/2018 21:38

Wow! do you really live life on the tv?

Get over yourself.getta life

As an old gimmer I love Patsy & Eddie!

elQuintoConyo · 04/05/2018 21:45

I also liked the 'alternative reality' where Saffy grew up to be Helena Bonham Carter and floated through life, just like her mother. I think Eddie was hallucinating on drugs when she was getting an ingrown toenail sorted out.

June Whitfield was casting perfection!

MarthaArthur · 04/05/2018 21:46

Oh yes the isolation tank! And the weird insinuation that patsy was actually born male

vampirethriller · 04/05/2018 22:44

I loved it as a teen and still think it's hilariousGrin
Patsy had a sex change female to male didn't she? Until "it dropped off"

I just loved AbFab. we literally cried with laughter. It was so ott and shockingly outraegous. But that was 25 years ago and although i still see some of the originals (my kids dont get it...) i really couldnt bear to see the film last year. I think some things should be left on a high.

StealthPolarBear · 05/05/2018 07:09

Very wise wido. I've seen the film.
