I'm looking to change my car in the next few months. Current car has one year's finance left on it (£1500). I'm financially stable and will likely be commuting ~40mins to uni starting in October

I'm trying to be sensible but I've seen a Ford Galaxy that I really like. It's older than mine, but had better equipment. It's also done around 130000 miles which is putting me off a bit. tinyurl.com/y9tdxkk8.

(or if you hate that, find me something with good spec, under £4000 and within 100 miles of Sunderland!)

Get a VW Golf! Economical, reliable and a fair size boot for a small car.

JustSeeingHowManyCharactersWeC · 04/05/2018 22:39

Ah sorry, just seen you need seats. Do the Volvo estates still have 2 boot seats? Can't remember which model it is.

QuestionableMouse · 04/05/2018 23:15

Are they proper seats or the ones like in the Zafira?

What about a Citroen Picasso, they have individual seats. They are generally not too expensive either.

I know someone said about French cars and they don't have a great reputation but I've got an old Citroen I've had for years and it's the best car I've ever had, never needed work or let me down and I'd happily get another. Had bad experiences with Renaults though

QuestionableMouse · 05/05/2018 00:26

Thanks. I'm not keen on French cars in general but I'll consider them.

I have a very similar Galaxy and I love it. That mileage is nothing to worry about; my first Galaxy did 250k+ before it died, and my last one did 170k before I sold it on. Current one is on 118k at the moment with absolutely no issues. All diesels, all utter workhorses, all easy to drive and park. I love Galaxies, if you've not noticed!
The price is actually not bad if you search for similar models.

QuestionableMouse · 05/05/2018 05:51

Thank you! I do really like it.

OP, check the post code on the photo - it may give away where you live.

QuestionableMouse · 05/05/2018 10:18

Thanks. It's from the house I grew up in as a kid. I don't live there any more.

We’ve spent more on DH’s dad’s 10 year old Skoda with 16k on the clock than on our SUV with almost 100k on the clock.

Low mileage isn’t a good thing nowadays. Cars need to be used.

reddington · 05/05/2018 10:32

130,000 miles on a petrol is beyond the average mileage for scrapping

That’s absolute crap I’m afraid. Any relatively modern petrol engine should be good for 250k+ miles. It’s diesels that are more likely to suffer expensive failures at high miles and make cars uneconomical to repair.

QuestionableMouse · 05/05/2018 11:15

My current car has about 46k on it and is starting to cost me money (almost 200 for a problem with the window, 150 for a new wheel bearing, money to get rid of the smoke smell that came with it.)

I've never been 100% happy with it if I'm honest.

Nonsense.

130k IS above the average mileage for scrapping on a petrol car.

250k for a petrol? Again, nonsense.

19lottie82 · 07/05/2018 14:00

PS my DH has been a mechanic and he says the highest mileage he has even seen on a petrol is 150k and that is very rare.

reddington · 07/05/2018 19:25

Your DH doesn’t know his arse from his elbow. You tend to find more high mileage diesels than petrols purely because high mileage drivers buy diesels as they are cheaper to run. High mileage diesels are much more likely to be written off due to an expensive repair than high mileage petrols. 150k mile petrols are not even slightly rare. There isn’t a car on sale today that’s not capable of 250k plus with proper servicing, modern engines are so good that the rest of the car will usually break before the engines. You’ll find exceptions to the rule of course but that’s how it is.

QuestionableMouse · 07/05/2018 20:52

I'm not scared off by high mileage TBH. The banger I learned to drive in had done something like 300k and was still going strong after I sold it.

“There isn’t a car on sale today that’s not capable of 250k plus with proper servicing, modern engines are so good that the rest of the car will usually break before the engines.”

So basically what you’re saying is if you’re prepared to keep throwing money at a car, past the point where it should have been scrapped a long time ago and the repairs are worth more than the actual car........ then the engine should be able to last 250k?

What is the point of that? Hmm

150k isn’t rare on a petrol car? Bullshit.

Interesting, given his 30 years experience.

I’ll also tell that to the garage where he worked as the manager for 8 years which was voted best independent garage in Scotland for 3 years in a row.

And also to his clients that bring their cars to him from 200 miles away, because they don’t trust anyone else to work on them.
