My 19 year old just came to me and told me that he has scheduled an urgent appointment with his GP for tomorrow and wants me to come along.

Apparently, he has found a lump on his testicle.

I have reassured him that "the big C" is not the only reason that lumps appear, but he ticks off many of the boxes of the "risk factors" list (white, tall, first degree relative with cancer, age group).

I have a sneaking suspicion that I am not going to sleep a lot tonight.

You've got an amazing son for acting so quickly. Fingers crossed for you all Flowers

Good luck to you and him OP. My Uncle had a lump (nearly 40 years ago now) and he left it and left it and unfortunately it was cancer and had spread. However, he was still cured with chemo although was sadly left unable to have children. But he had left it for months and months (possibly over a year) and was still ok. Hope all is well with the follow up.

DH had this. Ultrasound showed a cluster of cysts, he could only feel one of them. No treatment needed. Hope it's the same outcome for your son. Good luck.

Good luck OP. Be assured that testicular cancer has the best average outcome when caught early. I have four friends who've had it, one of whom has been asymmetrical for 32 years.

GlitteryFluff · 06/05/2018 08:40

Good luck.

THinking of you both OP - you have a fantastic young man there.

Andrewofgg · 06/05/2018 09:18

All the best to you both.

He's very mature so well done. A couple of years ago DH found a lump. He was given an emergency appointment with GP followed by a v quick referal for an ultrasound.

He was scanned from naval to knee and it didn't hurt according to him. Honest! He can choose to be accompanied or otherwise for the scan.

DH had two varococeles (sp?) it transpired. We were warned to could affect fertility but I am currently pregnant with our first conceived after only a couple of months of trying.

Hi OP. I know you'll have spent every moment thinking worst case scenarios. Most testicular lumps are nothing serious, but I would like to share the following to reassure you if his results don't show good news.

My dp had a swollen testicle last year and took himself off to the gp. A week later it was removed and was later diagnosed as cancer. He only had to have one dose (literally one single treatment) of chemo and was back at work within a month. The NHS were fantastic. Gp to chemo in just over a month. Every single person we spoke to at the hospital said that it is one of the easiest cancers to find, diagnose, remove and treat if dealt with early enough.

Macmillan were a fantastic support to him, me and our families. Look them up if need be.

At 19 your ds has shown maturity in getting this looked at quickly. Fingers crossed for a speedy healthy outcome OP.

My DS 14 found a lump a few months ago. He saw the GP at school (he boards) and was told it was fine. Went back last week for a follow up check and was sent for ultrasound last Friday. I'm sure it's fine, I used to work at the Marsden on the testicular cancer ward, results next week!!

Good luck to your son, am so proud he asked for help

JiminyBillyBob · 06/05/2018 09:28

Fingers crossed for you op x

I don’t really know what to say. I had a bit of a scare and worried myself that something could be cancer. Even got quickly sent to a breast clinic to get checked out. All is fine, thankfully and I’m just very scarred in a few places but no cancer. Hopefully it’s good news for your son too, I know I don’t know him but I’m very impressed with his initiative to go and get checked and for coming to you for support. Good luck and hope all is well. Can’t be easy for you either.
