If they are fugly/old lady/frumpy/
mumsy?

Just buy what you like! You can't see what other posters are wearing. We could all be sat here in Jesus sandals so why trust our opinion? Trust your own!

And maybe you have more confidence in your taste, and know what looks naff or not.

If you have no confidence, are generally fat and ugly, know that people smirk at you for looking frumpy, why shouldn't you be able to ask people who probably have more of a clue whether something is considered ugly or not? Often there is a fine line, and I genuinely can't tell. It doesn't mean I like something and am asking for permission to get it; it's more a genuine question, of people who might know what looks OK or not. If the responses are unanimous that they're awful, then I can take that into consideration, and not buy yet another stupid looking thing.

Why should I trust my own opinion when half the time it's crap and gets me sniggered at?! Why have a go at people who are trying to feel better about themselves by asking for advice?

Hmm, I do find the groupthink element a bit odd, "Are these okay/ what are we wearing/ what is the new converse?" Must be quite tiring to be bothered so much about fitting in.

Pickle it's fine to ask for opinions on S & B, that's exactly what the board is there for. Don't worry, there will always be those who think they are far superior because they don't care what they look like or are not interested in style/fashion at all or are so Uber-confident they don't care anyway. Lucky for them! But most of us do like to have others opinions, and not everyone oozes that same confidence.
Exactly why it's good to shop with friends, so you can try things on and get an opinion, It's no different to asking on here.

I swear The Ordinary's marketing department troll MN convincing us to put acid on our face! What's wrong with Anne French Deep Cleansing Milk followed by Nivea (blue or white tub - you choose!)

It's not about fitting in - but I love to see what others have found, what they like / don't like. It's great to see and consider things from a different perspective. And see different options in one thread rather than search the whole internet yourself. If you don't like it, don't read S&B. Simple.

In all fairness though, I think you could apply this to most of MN Grin
