Absolutely not

FASH84 · 03/05/2018 21:26

It's an American abomination.

Backingvocals · 03/05/2018 21:26

Yes it’s a wordConfused. Not more clever surely? That’s horrible.

NashvilleQueen · 03/05/2018 21:35

Annoyed?
Language evolves. It’s sufficiently clear so that everyone knows what is meant. I can’t get worked up about it.

steff13 · 03/05/2018 21:38

It's an American abomination.

How do you know the etymology of "cleverer" is American?

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 03/05/2018 21:40

It must be a very old American abomination. I'm 50 and my grandparents said it.

StealthPolarBear · 03/05/2018 21:45

I've always assumed it's a word

DougFargo · 03/05/2018 21:46

Clever cleverer cleverest

Perfectly normal, actual, words. In actual dictionaries, proper ones. Not seeing your problem here.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 03/05/2018 21:49

Is this a dig about my thread? If so you should have just commented on it. Bit low to start a new thread.

NewYearNewMe18 · 03/05/2018 21:51

Oxford Dictionary doesn't list 'cleverer' if you type it in the search bar it defaults to 'clever'

english.stackexchange.com/questions/145683/conundrum-cleverer-or-more-clever-simpler-or-more-simple-etc

TroubledLichen · 03/05/2018 21:51

It’s a word. In the sense that’s it’s in the dictionary. But it does sound clunky.

Ohyesiam · 03/05/2018 21:52

Yes, it’s a word, and not a new one.

TroubledLichen · 03/05/2018 21:54

NewYear that’s just how the OED works. Search for nicer and it defaults to nice, search for brighter and it gives you the definition for bright etc. etc.

Pinkponiesrock · 03/05/2018 21:59

Cleverer is a word and it’s fine. What is not fine is people saying ‘He’s more cleverer than her’. Now that gives me the rage!

Also ‘I couldn’t be more prouder’ Angry No of course you fucking couldn’t be!
It’s possible that you couldn’t be prouder or that you couldn’t be more proud but you can not be ‘more bastarding prouder’! Rant over Grin

Georgie - no idea what you’re on about. I heard Tony Bellew say it to David Haye on Sky and it irritated me. That’s all.
