To think make-up doesn't work for me ?

mypoosmellsofroses · 03/05/2018 17:36

I'm nearly 50 and I've tried on and off over the years to "do" makeup. Most of the time I don't bother but now and again I would like to.

I've done the following tutorials on YouTube thing, been to the counters and had makeovers, had professionally applied makeup and just meh really, I never look in the mirror and think that my features or my skin looks any better, I just look like a slightly painted version of me, no better in any way really.

Is there something that I'm genuinely missing or is it just that that's my face and you can't polish a turd? Grin

did any man ever get told he looked ill without a coating of beige and some red and black circles?

of course not. anyone who makes this remark should have a bucket of water thrown over them.

PitilessYank · 03/05/2018 19:43

At 51 I finally found what worked for me.

Lash extensions, lip stain (which is a neutral color but somehow, perhaps via moisturizing brings out my lip color), and botox. That is all I use.

TenGinBottles · 03/05/2018 19:47

I never wear make up. It always makes me look like I have a moustache and as I have hayfever, rubs off around my nose anyway. I'm sure i look spectacularly unprofessional in the office and certainly out-classed when I go out but even DH agrees I look worse with make up on.

specialsubject · 03/05/2018 19:49

again, no man is required to coat himself in beige and paint red and blac k circles to appear professional. nor is he required to twist his feet into ugly spiked shoes.

reetgood · 03/05/2018 19:51

Honestly, most people look better with the right make up. I’m in my thirties and wear tinted moisturiser, mascara, brow tint, under eye concealer and a bit of cheek tint. The general impression is not that I’m wearing make up, but that I have slept more than I have ;) . But you need to find a) the right products and b) the right colours. You don’t have to be a make up artist to work on a counter. If you ever wanted to wear something, id go with a make up artist tutorial.

PitilessYank · 03/05/2018 19:51

I always thought makeup was a strange concept-basically painting an idealized version of one's face, on one's face.

Whenever I used to play around with foundation, etc, I thought I looked very extreme with it on.

PitilessYank · 03/05/2018 19:53

Oh, I do dye my eyebrows as well, a dark brown/black. I like makeup that is easy, hence my choice of things that don't require daily upkeep.

specialsubject · 03/05/2018 19:55

the right make up is indeed invisible. so why bother? go to bed earlier is easier, cleaner, cheapy and less smelly!

Oldraver · 03/05/2018 20:02

I've never been much of a make-up person...unless it was glow in the dark mascara etc.

I went lat week to get some new foundation, haven't bought any in years and just wanted to even out my skin tone as I have been getting large red patches.

She did about four layers of stuff before the foundation then powdery stuff then insisted on mascara and lipstick. It really wasn't me and yes I had an even skin tone but I just looked bland

MyFriendFlickaWasAHorse · 03/05/2018 20:08

I look so much better with makeup than without. But I don’t really like how it feels on, so tend to save it for weekends and special occasions.

babyboyHarrison · 03/05/2018 20:25

Feel like I've been looking really haggard lately so been trying to wear a bit of make up. I found a site called beauty and the boutique and I've been really impressed with some of her tutorials. There's one where she only uses three products, I've basically been doing my make up like this now and you can hardly tell I'm wearing any but I just look fresher and less tired. I bought the veil corrector and then used Perricone MD no make up lipstick. I use a bit of the lipstick as blusher as I have very dry skin and I prefer a slightly dewy look to overly powdered. Don't generally bother with mascara as quite happy with my eyelashes. It is only someone so doesn't take me more than a minute to go but I do look much better for it.

chocolatesun · 03/05/2018 20:28

I like makeup but struggle to find foundation that doesn’t look weird or go blotchy. I found bare minerals original foundation to be really good. Having said that, I do think the natural look is so much nicer.

museumum · 03/05/2018 20:28

I hate looking made up. I have a powder foundation I use sparingly to even me out and then a brown-Black mascara on my blonde eyelashes and sometimes a lip gloss. But even that’s my “going out” effort. Normally I wear nothing.

Digestivescusturds · 03/05/2018 20:31

I look very tired without a bit of conclear and mascara and I’ll use some powder on my eyebrows to tidy them up but that’s it for me really. I’ve never suited anything bold

Bubba1234 · 03/05/2018 21:00

I’m no use at foundation but I notice in photos my eyes are brighter with eye makeup & lashes I hate all that contour n heavy makeup

Bubba1234 · 03/05/2018 21:01

Baby boy can you send a link of that 3 product video please ?

goose1964 · 03/05/2018 21:03

I'm another one who doesn't look much different with make up on

DelurkingAJ · 03/05/2018 21:09

All that make up does to me is ensure that I have a mountain of blackheads (yes, I have used many brands and remove it assiduously) that I then would want make up to cover. As to looking professional, pshaw, they’re not employing me to look decorative in the office.

Hopefully that will work. I quite like several of her tutorials. This one just uses a corrector like YSL touch eclat but shows you where to apply it and I do find it works for me and it's very little effort. I did buy the veil pen in the no. 2 and was happy with it but have since tried others and been happy with them too so think it's more about how to apply it.

Leicesterpiggott · 03/05/2018 22:02

The best thing ever is Clinique anti blemish B.B. cream. It's v light and translucent and thin. Looks like your own skin but better. Best product I've ever used. Barely even needs powder.

Bodear · 03/05/2018 22:05

@Doobigetta he didn’t try to tell us what to do at all. He just expressed an opinion. A bit random maybe but nothing inherently wrong with it!

What's the name of the Estee Lauder foundation you use?
