AIBU to be worried about the heartbeat sound i can hear in my ear?

Came on through the night and is very loud in my left ear. I wasn't worried about it until i looked it up on the NS website and it said to call for an urgent appointment if you experience this. I have called my surgery and am awaiting a triage call.

Anyone else had this and can tell me what it could be and why it might be urgent?

Had this countless times. Never heard of it being any kind of emergency, Somebody come and stop me looking it up, please.
Hope everything's okay, OP.

I've had it too. A type of tinnitus?

Namechanger2015 · 03/05/2018 14:02

I have had this for years, docs said its something to do with air in my inner ear, and its common in pregnancy and other things.

I can only hear it when I lie down at night though. Doc did not seem at all concerned.

One suggestion she gave was to hold my nose and blow out (so puff out my cheeks), a few times really hard, as if to try to pop my ears. It didn't really work, I should have gone back to follow up but never did.

Try not to worry!

I tend to get it if I get a wax build-up (sorry TMI), and also if I have an elevated heart rate/blood pressure. I remember getting it as a child when I woke up from nightmares, but I had my BP checked fairly recently and was told it is textbook, so don't think it is anything to worry about.
Can indicate high BP, though, so probably a good thing you've rung the doctor to be on the safe side, especially if you've never had it before.

Hearing your heartbeat in your ear can have lots of causes, some of which are nothing to worry about, some of which need investigating and possibly treating. You’re doing the right thing by calling the GP, it’s best to get it checked out as quickly as possible to rule out anything nasty.

Get your thyroid tested. Classic symptom.

GothMummy · 03/05/2018 14:16

I get it if my ears are blocked or if I have elevated blood pressure. Usually its just wax though!

Sallystyle · 03/05/2018 14:16

I have had this for a week off and on when lying down. I have health anxiety but googled, thinking it would be innocent enough.

Mine lasts less than a minute and it isn't every day. I haven't made a GP appointment, but I will do it it gets worse. I do have an under-active thyroid.

nuttyknitter · 03/05/2018 14:16

I've had this on and off for years and have no health problems.

Sallystyle · 03/05/2018 14:17

Blocked ears would make sense too. I have tiny ear canals and suffer with blocked ears.

Juells · 03/05/2018 14:18

Blimey, this has happened on and off my whole life. I thought it was nothing? I'm pretty sure I've been told it was nothing, just something to do with your ear.

blueskyinmarch · 03/05/2018 14:20

I am at the end of a horrible cold/cough/sinusitis thing but am feeling so much better now. I am not really overly worried just curious as to what it might be.

I have just looked at the symptoms for under active thyroid and i have loads of those but i am hesitant to jump straight to that. I don't think my ears are blocked with wax. I am not prone to that.

I had this throughout pregnancy. I assumed it was blood pressure related.

Roussette · 03/05/2018 14:28

Nothing to worry about I'm sure, it's usually when you have had an ear infection, are going to have an ear infection or have had blocked sinuses. I've had it hundreds of times

blueskyinmarch · 03/05/2018 14:37

Thanks everyone. I am still waiting the triage call. Will update later.

They called and they think it is related to the virus i have had. Possibly swollen gunky ears. I have to take anti inflammatories and drink lots of fluids. Happy with that.
