Nuture room at high school

My 13ds has hurt his foot kicking a ball in PE.
He's a bit of a drama queen, this happened Monday, last night he was complaining it hurt, this morning it still hurt.
I sent him off to school, he returned 10 mins later, it was hurting him a lot.
So i rang school to ask if he could be late, and wear trainers, I was going to get him a tax.
The receptionist spoke to me like utter shit and said i needed to get him to A&E???
The school needs a full medical report and will need to conduct a full risk assessment.
I got an emergency appt at GP, he looked at it and said its an Achilles heel strain, take paracetamol. I apologised for wasting his time, he said if the school needs a full medical report he will write one and charge them £70
So i called the school, and told the receptionst i had medical guidance, a sprain and calpol, she put me through to the medical officer?
My son can't wear his back trainers with grey dots on them, or he will be sent to the nuture room, but if he does wear black trainers and feels like it still hurts he can go to the nuture room anyway.
Wtf is a nuture room?

WTF is a a nuture room? Do they mean nurture room? Possible fancy name for a medical room? Stupid not to let him wear trainers.

aglassofroseplease · 02/05/2018 15:12

It's for vulnerable pupils who may need some extra support at time. As the name suggests it's to nurture

TeenTimesTwo · 02/05/2018 15:12

My guess is that it is either:
a) a base unit for those with difficulties who can't cope with being in the classroom full time
or:
b) a fancy name for isolation / referral unit where poorly behaving (or non-uniform wearing) children go to keep them away from the rest of the school

IlikemyTeahot · 02/05/2018 15:15

a) a base unit for those with difficulties who can't cope with being in the classroom full time

Smile ^^

taratill · 02/05/2018 15:31

nuture rooms are essential for some SEN children with anxiety and/ or other needs.

daphneduck · 02/05/2018 15:35

Calpol? If he’s 13 can he not take two paracetamol tablets to help manage the pain better?

Just send him in and tell him not to mention he trainers

ChoppedDaisy · 02/05/2018 15:38

Having worked in secondary a nurture room is usually either.

A place children with Sen /SN and anxiety or disabilities can go at lunch and breaks if they need extra support or a place away from the crowds.

Or a place for pupils to go if they are struggling to cope in class.

I've never heard of a full medical report and a risk assessment though for a hurt foot. Full disabilities yeah.

Brandnewshit · 02/05/2018 15:41

He doesn't need nurturing he needs to wear trainers and crack on with his education, it would only be for one day, there is a non uniform day Friday.
Im not trying to send him with pink hair, blatantly flouting school rules.
Im really annoyed with the way the receptionist spoke to me because we hadn't been to hospital.
He needs to wear his almost black trainers, not do PE, all this risk assessment and nurture room stuff is OTT.

Brandnewshit · 02/05/2018 15:43

Yeah i tried him with a paracetamol this morning, couldn't swallow it so good old calpol is doing the trick

I imagine fewer folk in the Nurture Room to inadvertently trample foot.

(Does your school website not have reference to what the purpose of the Nurture Room is?)

BarbarianMum · 02/05/2018 15:48

Schools can be funny about thjngs like breaks and sprains. They arebusy environments and I don't think they like to risk being blamed for injuries being made worse by jostling/being knocked. At dc's school those with limb injuries often end up in their SEN Unit or the computer centre for a few days, rather than being expected to traipse from class to class. Not the internal exclusion unit but.

aglassofroseplease · 02/05/2018 15:49

Is sounds like they're using it for other things and calling it the nurture room when it may not be

Brandnewshit · 02/05/2018 15:50

Nothing on the website no,
It was the instruction that if he wears black trainers no nurturing needed, grey and black he does!

At DD if she comes in with trainers on and a note with a decent reason why then all she needs to do is get it signed by a senior staff member and she's good to go. If there's no note then she spends the day in her form tutor's room. I'd say just send him in with the almost black trainers on and a note and go to class. If he ends up in the nurture room at least it's only for a day

Tumbleted · 02/05/2018 16:05

They shouldn’t be using the nurture room as ‘punishment’ for non conformity

Brandnewshit · 02/05/2018 16:06

Think thats what im going to do ginger.
Im really shocked that the school are prepared to let him waste 2 days of lessons because of this.
Under no circumstances was i allowed to send him late by 15 mins max in a taxi until i had a medical report, she actually told me to go to A&E. They had to risk assess him before he could go back.
And the black trainer thing, wasting another day in a fucking nuture room.

OP posts:
Brandnewshit · 02/05/2018 16:08

2 days of wasted lessons and a wasted gp appointment for a sore foot.
Its ridiculous.

OP posts:
taratill · 02/05/2018 16:10

You do know they work in nuture rooms right?
I think you are coming across a little bit dismissive of the fact your son might benefit from a less crowded space. Anxiety and SEN isn't catching you know!

BarbarianMum · 02/05/2018 16:11

How was the GP appointment "a waste". Your ds said he was in accute pain - that is quite often a sign of damage that requires medical attention.

Brandnewshit · 02/05/2018 16:25

It was a waste of an appointment, paracetamol was what i was giving him and what the dr said to give him.
And sitting away from his regular lesson in his regular classrooms is not a normal school day. So a waste of a productive day because his trainers have grey on them

OP posts:
Brandnewshit · 02/05/2018 16:29

The risk assessment hasnt said he needs to be in this room. The grey laces and logo on his trainers is the deciding factor in that.
I said my son is a bit of a drama queen. We have had words about that. He was in pain when walking. The school wouldnt let him come in late because of waiting for a taxi.
A waste of a school day.
If he had a lift he would have been just fine.
I dont drive so a taxi was the only other option.

Hey need a medical report to make a uniform adjustment for one/two days that’s nuts

PonderLand · 02/05/2018 16:36

Why are you referring to your son as a drama queen? It's a bit odd and unnecessary.

We had a similar room at my school and I had to go there when I was behind on coursework, I actually did more work there than I did in a normal lesson. Will your child's teachers send him work to complete related to what they're doing in class? If they will then just agree and move on.

bigbluebus · 02/05/2018 16:43

I think it is probably what they called 'pastoral' at my DS's school. It is where children are sent if they are distressed or need to talk, have an injury which prevents them climbing the stairs or have been removed from lessons due to SN. I think there was also a room off that room where children who had been placed in isolation sat and worked. The room served a purpose as a base for anyone who can't be in lessons for various reasons as it is staffed all day. It was not the SN base though nor was it the medical room at DS's school - they were elsewhere. They even had a dog on the pastoral room!

Brandnewshit · 02/05/2018 16:47

He is very dramatic with bumps and grazes and minor coughs. Ill phrase it that way.
Like most kids when they don't want to go to school. I dont think that's odd.
Tummy aches, head aches etc. I think most parents can vouch for that.
