Live bug in my pre packed sandwich - AIBU?

Last Friday I bought a duck wrap from tescos.
Being a fussy eater I always open the wrap and take out things like lettuce. Doing this I saw a hard shell with legs roll out.
On further investigation it was a fairly large bug that was still wriggling.
Totally put off I took pics and put the whole thing in a box and complained to head office.
After a bit of googling in found it is a stink bug.
Some of which release cyanide when threatened or attacked.
Looking back at the bug, it is now up and moving around the box. Must have warmed up after being in the chilled.
I went back to head office and expressed my concerns being 6 months pregnant and potentially consuming a cyanide filled bug.
They asked me to take the bug, sandwich and wrapper to my local store to be sent off, which I have done, and they are treating this as "an extremely serious complaint".

They gave me a 7.50 voucher (2.50 for the sandwich and 5 goodwill)
AIBU saying that this is not sufficient and I want it investigated further?

That’s not a stink bug.

ImAGoofyGoober · 02/05/2018 15:44

Stinky or not stinky that is gross.

Not sure what else Tesco can do though?

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 02/05/2018 15:48

Jesus, how much compo are you after?!

Ridiculous.

And that looks more like a shield bug then a stink bug...but of course, you’re the entomologist Hmm

I had a piece of plastic in a tesco sandwich once... I got £7.50 like yourself and then another £10 after investigation. The thing is all food is made in a factory these days so its bound to happen. Also having salad in production lines will inevitably bring in bugs and natural pests... not nice to end up in your sandwich but its only natural. If you'd have found something un-natural it would be worse IMO.

Apparently money to 3 x the original value of the item is the going rate. An ex found this out to his disgust after finding a nail in a yoghurt from Morrisons, years ago. He had thought he’d get £100’s in compensation Grin

If you find something truly nasty in a food product you can report it here:

A stink bug is a type of shield bug, but unless you're in the USA OP it is more likely one of our native and harmless types of shield bug.
I wouldn't want to eat one - but I'm vegetarian :)

baxterboi · 02/05/2018 16:32

Isn't a stink bug and a shield bug the same thing??

mummyhaschangedhername · 02/05/2018 16:34

Very gross, whatever it is. I don't know much about bugs but looked like the stink bug on wiki I looked up.

BlackInk · 02/05/2018 16:39

... and wouldn't eat a duck either :)

Thequeenisdeadboys · 02/05/2018 16:42

Ugh. Gross. Bombardier Wouldn't just 'write it off as one of those things'..hygiene in the tesco kitchens (or wherever the wraps are made) is seriously lacking if they can't wash a bit of lettuce ! And it is a Stink Bug.

CazY777 · 02/05/2018 16:44

I like shield bugs (but not in a sandwich!). They can give off a smell when handled but I don't think it will do you much harm.

lisaorris99 · 02/05/2018 16:46

I had a Cadbury’s creme egg full of dead ants once. I sent it off and got an explanatory letter saying they had got into the eggs during production process, along with a £10 voucher and a box of chocolate bars. I was quite happy with that - even though I had eaten some of them before I noticed Shock

No matter how thorough food prep is, bugs can make their way in - especially in things like lettuce. I don’t really know what a stink bug is but I’d put it down to bad luck and enjoy your voucher (maybe don’t buy another sandwich !)

amusedbush · 02/05/2018 16:53

It's probably a harmless shield bug. I had one of those climb out of a box of grapes a few years ago - it gave me the fright of my life but I survived.

gastropod · 02/05/2018 17:07

I had a shield bug leap energetically out of my freshly made salad last Friday. I flipped it back in, took it back to the salad bar and they gave me a refund and a free cookie Grin
