Am I a cheeky fucker?

Back in a December I accidentally scratched a neighbours old 4x4 on the bumper. I knocked on the door immediately to apologise, offer to pay to fix, give insurance details etc.
A few days later he knocked on my door, said let’s not bother going through insurance, he’s getting it MOT’d in Feb, it’s only small, He’ll just get it fixed then.
I said that’s fine, let me know when you’re ready and how much it costs and i’ll Pay.

February rolls around and nothing. In March, I bumped into him, he said he’s doing it soon. That’s fine, I said let me know and I’ll pay.

It’s now May and nothing.
To be totally honest he’s well known on our street for being a bit grumpy and formidable and so I haven’t knocked to chase it up...

But now I’m thinking maybe he was expecting the money in advance? I don’t want to do this as I want to pay what it actually cost to fix, it’s still parked in the same place and not fixed.

AIBACF? (Am I being a cheeky fucker) not to drop the money through the door? (I don’t know how much it will cost, he suggested around £100)

YANBACF. Just leave it until he tells you how much it was!

FurForksSake · 02/05/2018 07:14

A neighbour scratched our car, she came round and offered to pay, she seemed massively confused when we said not to worry about it. It’s really not a big deal, if he wants the money he can make The effort at this point, you’ve tried!

Friolero · 02/05/2018 07:14

No, not at all. You've offered a couple of times to pay already, the onus is on him now to let you know how much you owe him.

user1493413286 · 02/05/2018 07:16

No not at all! Why would you drop the money if he hasn’t asked for it?
It sounds like he can’t be bothered and if that’s the case then you’ve been lucky.
When he does let you know I’d check the figure with some garages ( maybe take a picture subtly before).

BoobleMcB · 02/05/2018 07:17

I'd expect to see a receipt if I was to pay tbh. But as a pp said, if it was me and it was only superficial and small i wouldn't expect the other person to pay really

Namechangegamechange123 · 02/05/2018 07:18

Because whenever I see him he says ‘i’ll be doing it soon...’ [expectant pause]

And I don’t have £100 to spare at any given time, so I’ve put it to one side but it’s been 5 months now!

I suspect he just wants the cash. Next time he says it, just say oh great, pop the receipt through and I will give you a cheque/cash.

icelollycraving · 02/05/2018 07:25

Keep the money aside though. Sod’s law he will ask for it the minute it’s spent!

supersop60 · 02/05/2018 07:36

I agree with icelolly. keep the money aside, but only hand it over when you see the receipt. Otherwise, you're just giving him some pocket money.

user1492958275 · 02/05/2018 07:44

Is it a new car? Good condition?

Maybe he's just not that fussed about it.

I've scratched a car once in a car park and was mortified, it was an old peugeot the guy told me not to worry as he was scrapping it soon!

I played it forward when I had a bump from a motor bike in my old crappy car and just let it slide.

It was small and only cosmetic and I just wasn't that fussed.

I'd be the hulk if someone hit my new car!

Petalflowers · 02/05/2018 07:53

No, you are not a cf.

You admitted to the accident straight away, and have twice offered to pay.

After all this time, I think the onus is on him to ask you for the money.

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 02/05/2018 08:01

Sounds like he’s not bothered about getting it fixed but wants the money from you. Agree with previous posters just wait for the receipt

GnotherGnu · 02/05/2018 08:02

If it's an old car that already has a few scratches, he's probably not that bothered. Wait till he asks.

Fintress · 02/05/2018 08:13

Definitely not a CF! At least you offered to pay, not like a neighbour who we had who opened their door right into the side of our brand new 2 week old car when taking their child out of a car seat, there was loads of room, they parked too close. They never mentioned it, the only reason we know is because another neighbour came and told us. When I asked the neighbour in question about it, they shrugged and pretended they didn't understand me. They weren't here long, they had a short let. We weren't too happy.
