To be furious with Habitat

After having lived with our easy to care for cheap, very comfortable, but now slightly worn sofa for 17 years, we decided to splash out on a new sofa. This was last year in December to take advantage of the Christmas sales. We decided on the Habitat Opollo sofa - very large, with a chaise, and quite expensive. We were told it was in stock and could be delivered in 2 weeks. We paid for it in full.
Fast forward to 5 months later and we still haven't received it.
I spare you all the boring details of what happened in these 5 months, but briefly, we were given various delivery dates (3 in total, on 2 of the days I took the day off work), all of which were cancelled on the day as the delivery company either had no parts of the sofa or just one part.
I have made numerous phone calls to Habitat and have always spoken with very nice, but totally ineffective employees.
Today, finally, I had enough - again, a promised delivery, but when the delivery person came he said they forgot to load our sofa on the truck, and I would need to arrange a re-delivery.
So I called Habitat to cancel and was told that I had to pay 20% of the purchase price as it was made to order (I wasn't made aware that this was made to order, when I paid for it, I was told it was in stock and ready to be delivered)
So I basically entered a contract with Habitat - I pay, you deliver. They don't fulfil their part of the deal, have my money and then I'm being penalised for their ineptitude!
I'm actually in touch with them and they are "trying" to waiver the 20% charge. But I'm still furious. And also a bit sad because Habitat used to be such a good shop.
But mainly furious!

@Viktoria you have delivery rights...Martin Lewis explains here www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/delivery-rights#claim apparently in theory you could claim compensation for the second day you took off work for the non delivery. I think though I'd just want done with the whole thing but it probably gives you a bit more leverage.

Make a complaint via resolve.co.uk I’ve found this helps greatly in getting a formal response from the appropriate person and keeps the case in one place for you
Good luck!

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 03/05/2018 06:38

£40 doesn’t cover the time off work. Push for more.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 03/05/2018 06:43

I’d put loads of complaint across their SOcial Media as that usually gets a prompt response.

ivykaty44 · 03/05/2018 06:45

£40 voucher..? So you have to use it in thier store, I’d get real money

I'd want them to reimburse me for my two days holiday, OP.

They really have taken the piss. Why should you have to use up two days holiday on a non-delivery?

VanillaSugar · 03/05/2018 06:51

A voucher to use in store so that you can buy more stuff which won’t be delivered?

Hahahahhaha - this is ludicrous!!! You want a cheque OP (and don’t let them cancel it).

MiniCooperLover · 03/05/2018 07:03

Refuse the voucher, insist on a cheque and £40 is by no means enough for a 5 month delay plus pointless days off work 😡

roses2 · 03/05/2018 07:24

Definitely ask for reimbursement for the two days off. You could have used those days for other things...

Mbear · 03/05/2018 07:58

Aaaah, that’s a shame, we love habitat and have loads of stuff from them. Always had great service.

NewPapaGuinea · 03/05/2018 08:10

Customer experience (CX) is how the bricks and mortar businesses can battle back against the internet, yet so many mess it up. Didn’t Habitat go into administration a few years ago and then were bought? I would expect CX to be one of their key metrics.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 03/05/2018 08:13

Yes to Twitter.

This happened to a relative of mine when MFI still existed. She took a couple of days off for delivery dates, same as OP. Failures both. She rang their customer care line to complain and demanded compensation for the lost days at work. They paid up!

viktoria · 03/05/2018 08:23

My response yesterday was "you are very funny." I will keep you posted

It's amazing how quickly things get sorted when you tweet them.

BewareOfDragons · 03/05/2018 08:27

Social media is your friend in cases like this. Plus, you can't be the only one they're messing around like this.

Tweet at them.

Facebook at them.

Other people will chime in with horror stories, no doubt. This can't be a one-off.

charleslambert · 28/08/2020 04:11

I'm wondering if any others have found that Habitat has very poor customer service. It seems to be I'm not alone in finding the system appalling.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 28/08/2020 04:25

Isn't Habitat owned by sainsbury's now?
