AIBU about gender/sports in this private school?

I’m looking at brochures of two private schools locally in case my eldest daughter could apply for a scholarship. I’ve never been to private school. I don’t know anyone who has been to private school.

I’m a single parent with two daughters, and I wholly believe in bringing them up to play with/compete/do whatever they want despite traditional gender norms. (So far this has backfired as all they ever want to do is “typical girly stuff”)

One of these schools listed all the sports available. For boys: rugby, football, cricket and a boys hockey team. For girls: hockey, netball.

AIBU this sends out all the wrong messages in this day and age? Why are the boys “allowed” a hockey team when the girls aren’t allowed a team in any of the more male dominated sports? I then carried on reading, noticing that girls HAVE to wear skirts and tights also.

None of this would bother my eldest, she loves wearing skirts, plays sports under duress and wouldn’t really care about the reinforcement of typical gender norms. It’s academic record is fabulous and the girls go on to further education just as (or more) qualified than the boys so AIBU that this snapshot of their sports and uniform policy is actually putting me off the school?

Agree re it is single sex that makes a difference rather than state / private.

Institute of Physics did a study that demonsrated this IIRC.

Our dd2 is in private school.

The girls have to wear a school skirt or pinafore which costs a fucking fortune. Many of the parents were up in arms when one suggested they were allowed to wear trousers.

The sports selection in the school you looked at looks shit. Ours is very good with multi gender teams

For anyone who likes reading this sort of thing!

IOP

"Using data from the National Pupil Database, which tracks pupils as they go through school, the report looks at differences in the patterns of choice of A-level physics for girls and boys in different types of schools.

Main findings from the report:

49% of maintained co-ed schools sent no girls on to take A-level physics in 2011. The figure for all secondary schools is 46%
Girls were almost two and a half times more likely to go on to do A-level physics if they came from a girls’ school rather than a co-ed school (for all types of maintained schools in England)

Twice the percentage of girls who went on to do A-level physics came from a school with a sixth form, compared to schools that only teach up to age 16 (for co-ed maintained schools in England)

For maintained schools in England, the positive effect of single-sex education on girls’ choice of physics post-16 is not replicated in the other sciences"

Thank you SardineReturns, yes, I know there’s lots of hidden costs (even registering your interest costs £25) so it would be a big decision to make. The local girls school is definitely looking more appealing by the moment 😂😂😂

By experience, sport teams are different for boys and girls because of the demand. There might be the odd girl who wants to play rugby, but nowhere near enough to form a full team. Even when you open the sports to both gender when they are little, you end up with a couple of girls max in a "boy" sport and vice-versa.

I think this is bollocks. Otherwise why does pretty much every university manage to put together women’s rugby and football teams? Why is girls soccer so huge in the USA? Why do plenty of little girls enjoy playing football in the park or at primary school jntil it becomes gendered? Do you seriously think girls are born with an innate aversion to ‘boy’ sports?

The boys hockey team always lost to the girls at my school. They were terrified of playing them Grin
